May 22, 2024 (Minneapolis): The Minneapolis Police Department is now investigating the shooting of a woman on Sunday May 19, 2024, in the 2900 block of Cedar Avenue as a homicide. The woman died early this morning at Hennepin Healthcare, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara says the woman and her child were both shot while sitting in their car at approximately 9:23 pm on Sunday. The child is expected to survive.
“I am deeply saddened to learn that the mother of this child has lost her life in such a senseless act of violence,” O’Hara said. “This incident is a tragic reminder of how gun violence can - and is - tearing apart families in our community.”
O’Hara is encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). There have been no arrests.
Preliminary information indicates that a suspect fired shots into the vehicle. MPD is investigating the sequence of events that led up to the shooting and is working to determine if this was a targeted shooting. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation indicating 4 shots fired and identified evidence of gunfire in the alley.
