Statement from Chief O’Hara Regarding the Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty's Presentation to the Minneapolis City Council

March 8, 2024 (Minneapolis): The Minneapolis Police Department is working around the clock, 24/7 to arrest the most dangerous juveniles who are terrorizing our residents—in some cases, pistol-whipping victims and even sticking guns in their mouths as they rob them of their purses, phones, and other valuables.

I am confident that we are building the strongest cases we can and sending them to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for charging.  Any implication that Minneapolis police officers aren’t doing their part or that the department is not partnering with others is untrue and is a slap in the face to the hard-working cops who are trying to keep our residents safe.

I fully support diverting kids from jail and prison, but many of the suspects in the recent robbery spree and carjackings are violent offenders with long criminal histories. We are seeing the same kids over and over. In a recent arrest, one juvenile had seven active warrants for his arrest and his parent pleaded with the MPD to lock him up for his safety. This is proof that we need more than partnerships-- partnerships aren’t solving the problem of violent crime.

We will continue to interrupt violent crime where it occurs, arrest those who are committing violent crimes, and present cases to the County Attorney’s office for prosecution.
