Armed Robbery

The last robbery, which occurred at 9:24 p.m., included a carjacking.

At approximately 9:25 p.m., an officer observed the carjacked, black Mazda CX5, used in the commission of several of the robberies, cross the Lowry bridge at a high rate of speed. That black Mazda was soon followed by the gray Mazda CX5 which had been carjacked at 9:24 p.m.

Assisted by a State Patrol helicopter and a Minneapolis Police Department drone, MPD Officers pursued the black Mazda to the 1700 block of Newton Ave. N. After a short foot chase, officers arrested a 17-year-old who was hiding underneath a vehicle. The juvenile was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.  A handgun was recovered.

The gray Mazda crashed on Sheridan Ave. N and W Farwell Ave, hitting a parked Tesla and rolling over. Two juveniles, ages 17 and 14, were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. They were medically cleared and then booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center. Police believe at least two suspects are still at large.

The MPD is thankful for the support of the Minnesota State Patrol, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Metro Transit Police for their support in the arrest efforts Sunday.

We urge the public to report suspicious activity to 911 immediately. In some cases, groups of juveniles drive around in stolen cars, sometimes two or more stolen cars together, and they are seen circling the block or casing an area before a crime is committed. The sooner police are notified of suspicious activity, the more likely they are to prevent further crimes.

If you see a robbery in progress, call 911 and provide the operator with as many details as possible.

If you experience a robbery, remember that property can be replaced. It is difficult to observe details during such incidents, especially if you are approached by several individuals.  Please do your best to focus on details about the clothing suspects wore, the vehicles they drove, and any notable characteristics. If you're able to, get a license plate—even a partial license plate number helps.
