February 10, 2024 (Minneapolis): At approximately 3:37 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2024, officers from the 4th Precinct responded to the report of a shooting on the 2400 block of Golden Valley Road. Officers identified a male in his 20s with life-threatening gunshot wounds lying in an alley. Officers rendered immediate medical aid until relieved by Fire and EMS. Despite all life-saving efforts, the injured male died at the scene.
Minutes later, a male in his 20s with potentially life-threatening injuries arrived in Mercedes sedan at North Memorial Medical Center. An uninjured 2-year-old child was in the vehicle with him.
Preliminary information indicates that two males approached a Mercedes sedan in the alley occupied by the driver and a 2-year-old child. A short time later, gunfire erupted. The Mercedes left the scene and later arrived at North Memorial Medical Center. One of the two males who approached the Mercedes died at the scene and the other, Darnell Cornelius Lewis, age 21, was taken into custody. The Mercedes was damaged by gunfire. Investigators are working to determine if shots were fired from inside the Mercedes.
Darnell Lewis was booked into the Hennepin County Jail.
“I am grateful for the outstanding police work of our responding Minneapolis Police Officers,” said Chief O’Hara. “They took quick action and attempted to save a life while also making an arrest of a gunman and recovering handguns.”

Forensic scientists from the Minneapolis Police Forensic Division responded to process the scene and collect evidence. Homicide detectives responded to begin an investigation.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the deceased man’s name along with the cause and manner of his death.
