Dear neighbor,
This afternoon, Mayor Frey’s Administration carried out a mass displacement effort and eviction without adequate housing options for people. This forced over 150 people to move during the winter in Phillips. At the request of Indigenous community leaders and over a one hundred emails from Ward 9 constituents, I joined residents and observed the eviction to support a positive and humane outcome for our community and ask for a delay.
Community members spent the day helping pack and move residents' belongings. It’s clear that residents continue to step up, while we, as the city, continue to fail them. It’s a reminder that we need to pass an encampment response policy this term to address this inhumanity.
On December 7, 2023, the majority of the City Council asked Mayor Frey to delay the eviction in order to address public health needs and work towards a navigation center, among other things. We knew that without this, the formation of new encampments in our neighborhoods would occur.
After the mass displacement effort and eviction of Nenookaasi Healing Camp, residents moved 3 blocks south along with their yurts to 26th and 14th Ave South in Ward 9. The Mayor’s administration needs to work with the City Council to collaborate on short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions to reduce homelessness.
I am committed to working with the council to approve funding while working with community, service providers, and government officials to establish a Cultural Healing Center for people to move into.
Sincerely,
Jason Chavez
