Nenookaasi Healing Camp - Letter to Mayor Frey,

Dear neighbor.

I wanted to share an update regarding Nenookaasi Healing Camp. This afternoon, I sent Mayor Frey a letter regarding his effort of mass displacement and the lack of coordination with the residents to achieve a shared goal.

On Thursday, January 4th, his administration is planning to carry out an eviction of over one hundred overwhelmingly Indigenous residents of Nenookaasi Healing Camp. I will be observing the eviction tomorrow to ensure community members are not harmed in the process.

I asked him to stop the planned eviction tomorrow and to join us for a meeting with government officials, encampment residents, and service providers to establish a Cultural Healing Center or something similar that we can move people into.

Letter to Mayor Frey Regarding the Eviction of Nenookaasi Healing Camp

Dear Mayor Jacob Frey,

I’m emailing you regarding your effort of mass displacement tomorrow and the lack of coordination with the residents to achieve a shared goal. On Thursday, January 4th, your administration is planning to carry out an eviction of over one hundred overwhelmingly Indigenous residents of Nenookaasi Healing Camp.

I do not support this eviction and mass displacement effort of communities of color in South Minneapolis. The City Council is more than ready to collaborate and work with your administration to adequately fund a Cultural Healing Center or something similar, so people have a safe place to go. I implore you to work with us on this.

It is my understanding that your administration would be supportive of a similar effort if there would be a service provider with 24/7 capacity care. My commitment is to help your administration with this task and to help move funding through the council to help these providers with this work as soon as possible. It is also my understanding that providers are willing to help us with this work as long as they also receive adequate support.

There is a desperate need for collaboration at this moment. I know that we can find an immediate solution while working to achieve the long-term solutions our residents deserve and need. Evicting  Nenookaasi Healing Camp will make it difficult to find real and long-term solutions to address homelessness.

I am asking you to stop the planned eviction tomorrow and to join us for a meeting with government officials, encampment residents, and service providers to establish a Cultural Healing Center or something similar.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Jason Chavez
