Gun Violence on East Lake Street,

We’ve had two devastating days of violence on East Lake Street. Gun violence has taken the life of one person and has left three others injured.

On December 22, at 9:00PM, the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a reported shooting on the 2200 Block of E. Lake Street. They located a victim with a gunshot wound to the right and left leg. Another victim was self transported to HCMC with a minor gun shot wound to the arm. Both are expected to live.

Last night, at 7:38PM, the Minneapolis Police Department responded to a shooting near the 2200 Block of East Lake Street. Two people suffered gun wounds. The pregnant woman is alive and is receiving medical attention. The male victim has died.

My heart breaks for these reckless acts of violence. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. No one should ever have to fear for their life. Or fear that people will shoot at them from moving vehicles. This is unacceptable.

This year, I secured funding to establish a Lake Street Safety Center to help create a safe and healthy environment in this corner. I am committed to working with my colleagues to ensure this becomes successful. I also passed funding for a collaborative public safety programs in East Phillips where these shootings occurred.

I look forward to working with our neighbors to establish these and ensure they reducing public safety concerns in our neighborhood.
