Protect Your Children From Lead

For Poisoning Prevention Week, know how to protect young children from lead poisoning. Lead poisoning can damage the brain and other vital organs and cause behavior problems and even death with high enough exposure.

We’re seeing more children with elevated blood lead levels in Minneapolis: 112 children tested positive for lead poisoning in 2022, which is the highest number since 2018. Since lead exposure commonly comes from lead painted windows, older painted toys and older pottery, here are some tips to keep your children safer around these.

Lead Paint Protection:

The most common cause of lead exposure in homes is lead paint dust, which often comes from windows with paint from before 1978. If your windows could have lead paint, watch this video to learn how to properly clean them before having them open this spring.

Test Household Items For Lead:

Common household items that can contain lead include older pottery and older painted wood, metal or vinyl toys such as animals, farm animals, dinosaurs, old trucks and toy tractors.

Contact the Health Department to get your household items tested for lead.

In the meantime, keep older painted toys away from young children, and don’t put food or drinks in older pottery or pottery that came from outside the U.S.

Visit the City website for more information on testing your children and home for lead.

Contact 311 to Report Potholes

We’re asking for the public’s help to report potholes to 311. Public Works uses those reports to help prioritize work and take care of street issues as efficiently and effectively as possible.

There are many ways to contact 311. You can call, email, text or use the mobile app!

  • Call: You can call 311 or (612) 673-3000 Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM

  • Text: Just text two or three keywords to 311TXT or 311898 to receive an answer from the Minneapolis 311 information database on your mobile phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • App: Report neighborhood issues on the 311 mobile app 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Potholes form when water enters cracks in the streets, freezes, expands and then breaks up the pavement. While it’s typical to see potholes form in the winter and spring, we’re seeing more potholes than usual because this winter has had more freeze-thaw cycles than usual. We even had a stretch of days in January with a freeze-thaw cycle almost every day: above freezing during the day and below freezing at night.

To fill potholes in the winter and early spring, City crews use “cold mix,” an asphalt product that is temporary. It may pop back out and need filling again. It will likely need to be replaced when the asphalt plants open in the spring.

Once the asphalt plants open in the spring, usually after April 1, City crews will be aggressively filling all potholes with more long-lasting material.

Then in the summer, crews fill cracks in the streets to keep water out and prevent the next year’s potholes as much as possible. We also resurface about 15 miles of streets each year and have multiple yearly reconstruction projects.

Watch a press conference about the City’s response to the challenging pothole season.

Preserving Heritage of African Americans in Minneapolis

The first part of a project to preserve Minneapolis African American heritage is complete. The community outreach effort asked Black community members about their needs and wants related to heritage preservation and cultural resources.

This engagement project is the first step toward creating a comprehensive historic and cultural context study, a document that will identify and research many different sites and properties in Minneapolis significant for their associations with Black and African American heritage.

About the Report:

In the engagement report, you’ll find:

  • Information about activities with the community.
  • A draft outline of the history of African Americans in Minneapolis. This type of document describes significant historic properties, neighborhoods of interest, and the community that shaped the history of Minneapolis. The City will use this outline to guide heritage planning.
  • A preliminary list and map of places in the city that may be important to the African American community.

Next Steps:

  • Staff will apply for a grant to fund the historic and cultural context study, based on the drafted outline.
  • Staff will continue to engage with interested community members.

Read more about the project on the City website.
