Creative Response Fund Grantees Spotlight:
Summer Cypher

Summer Cypher - Drone View - post 1280 x 480.jpg

Summer Cypher 2021 / Chicago Avenue & Lake Street. Drone photo by Teddy Grimes.

As we dream of summer, we look back at the work of multidisciplinary hip-hop artists Teddy Grimes and Kimani Beard. As the co-founders of Summer Cypher, they create authentic spaces where people in community can immerse themselves into a process of self-exploration and critical reflection within the raw elements of hip-hop culture.

Summer Cypher provides intentional spaces for community where people of all ages can explore raw, uncut, authentic expressions of hip-hop in safe, inclusive, interracial, intercultural, and intergenerational healing environments. Participants are free to be in a safe space that is at peace; free of violence, shock, or fearful elements; free of being told what to do, a respite from trauma.

By the time Teddy and Kimani co-founded Summer Cypher, there was little they couldn’t take on by way of music, video, photography, dance, hip-hop pop-up events, promotions, entertainment, and community building.

A new updated and redesigned GIS collection of public art tours is now online and ready for viewing.

In the last five years over 28,000 people have visited the City’s Public Art tour maps.

The City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board collaborated to create seven educational public art tours which showcase the public art collection and art on Park land. The tours include five tours which are geographically focused across large areas of the city, and two special guided tours of the new Public Service Building & Nicollet Mall.

New features in the area tours allow users to:

  • Either select a point on a map, or an image in the gallery to learn more about a specific artwork; and

Cottage Grove - Glacial Valley Park Building - post

Rendering of the new Glacial Valley Park Building (GVPB)

The city of Cottage Grove is seeking an artist or artist team to create and install a permanent public artwork inside the new Glacial Valley Park Building (GVPB).

The City of Cottage Grove seeks to incorporate public art into the new building to help reflect the values and support the culture of the Glacial Valley Park Building (GVPB), with focus on four themes: Education, Sustainability, Personal Development & Recreation, Accessible Community for All.

As Cottage Grove continues to grow, Glacial Valley Park (9900 Ravine Parkway S) is the newest

This area was also where the St. Croix River once flowed before it shifted to the east at its current location we know today.

Artist(s) can work in any medium appropriate for installing art on available locations, including
enameled metal, sculpture, metal relief, mosaic, mural or combination of medium. Art must
work within confinements of lighting and electrical provided in the building plans.
