Seeking community input to help shape New Nicollet Redevelopment project

Kmart site aerial view

Aerial view of old Kmart store

The City of Minneapolis wants to hear from community members about their visions for the future of the former Kmart site. The City is reconnecting Nicollet Avenue between Lake Street and the Midtown Greenway as part of the New Nicollet Redevelopment Project.

The project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help reshape the future of the site and contribute to an increased quality of life for people living and working in the immediate area.

Ways to share feedback

The City of Minneapolis owns roughly 10 acres of land formerly home to the Kmart store. Reopening Nicollet Avenue at Lake Street has been a top City and community priority for decades. Reopening the street will reconnect neighborhoods, reestablish the street grid and set the stage for new development on land currently home to single-story retail buildings and surface parking lots.

The broad project goals include:

  • Reconnecting people and places.
  • Building safe, equitable and sustainable transportation networks.
  • Building for who is there.
  • Designing space to live, work, shop and play here.
  • Designing safe and healthy communities.

This first phase of engagement focuses on open dialogues with community members who live, work, shop and visit the area. The second phase will focus on a public space plan and Nicollet Avenue layout plan, which will require City Council approval. The third phase of engagement will discuss the future development of buildings.

Neighborhood Stabilization Program closeout

The City recently completed closeout of its final Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) direct HUD grant that was received as a result of the foreclosure crisis. In total, HUD provided $35 million dollars across three NSP grants that supported acquisition, demolition, rehabilitation, new construction, and affordability gap financing for ownership and rental units serving households at targeted income levels.

NSP 2

  • Total Funds Expended - $26,605,525.74
  • This grant was a consortium partnership with Hennepin County and Brooklyn Park.  Minneapolis-specific outcomes: 69 properties redeveloped, 133 households receiving down payment assistance, 65 housing units rehabbed for affordable rental, 113 new construction affordable ownership units

Demolition underway at Upper Harbor site for new riverfront park

Upper Harbor rendering

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is working with the City of Minneapolis on the former Upper Harbor Terminal site to get it ready for a new 20-acre riverfront park. Building demolition and site grading has begun at the future park.

The new regional park is part of a long-term redevelopment planned for the 53-acre former shipping terminal that closed at the end of 2014. The park will follow the west side of the Mississippi River for nearly a mile from 33rd Avenue North past Dowling Avenue North. It will include:

  • A rehabilitated riverbank and shoreline with a river overlook.
  • Bike and walking paths along the river and through the park.
  • A parkway road with parking.
  • A central open plaza and lawn area for events and activities.
  • Native trees, grasses, woody shrubs and perennials planted across the park.
  • Stormwater treatment.

Currie Park Mosaic celebration

Mosaic

Tableau Congeries, a new mosaic by Craig David in Currie Park

City of Minneapolis Art in Public Places and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board are hosting a celebration on Saturday, October 29 at 11 a.m. for Tableau Congeries, a new mosaic by Craig David in Currie Park.

The mosaic features stories gathered from conversations with community members from nine cultures that have called Cedar Riverside home, including Mayan, Somali, Oromo, Czech, Scandinavia, Czech, Hmong, Korean, Dakota, and Ojibwe. The central image is an oda or sycamore tree, respected by the Omoro as a symbol of tranquility. The mosaic also features an original poem by Deeq Abdi.

This summer, community members assisted David with installing the stone and porcelain mosaic, by adding tiles during two weekend workshops.

The celebration in Currie Park is on 15 Avenue South, midway between 4th and 6th streets, and will feature music and refreshments.
