Just three days until the Green Zones environmental justice summit

The Northside and Southside Green Zones of Minneapolis are hosting an environmental justice Green Zone Summit at the Minneapolis Community Connections Conference.

Join us on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to connect with fellow neighbors and organizers to raise awareness and build power to advance environmental justice actions in Minneapolis.

Location: Minneapolis Convention Center, Level One (first floor)
1301 2nd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55404.

Registration: Register on the conference app or in person on the day of the conference in front of Hall B in multiple languages starting at 8:30 a.m.

Agenda: We will have community-led sessions on climate justice, urban agriculture, green workforce, zero waste and air pollution.

Environmental Justice – From Impact to Implementation

Experience a showcase of environmental justice projects being implemented in the Northside and Southside Green Zones by community organizers and organizations supported with 2021 funding from the City of Minneapolis. Projects include: 

  • a light emitting sculpture on the Midtown Greenway in Southside with Tim Springer and Soren Jensen, Midtown Greenway Coalition
  • a Native youth culinary workforce development program with Chad Hebert at Little Earth of United Tribes
  • Southside Green Zone artwork and signage with Karen Clark of Women's Environmental Institute and East Phillips Neighborhood Institute
  • creation of interactive maps of Edible Boulevards and community gardens in North and South Minneapolis as well as a Plant Based Business Guide from Michelle Shaw of Minneapolis Edible Boulevards
  • clean-up of Edna’s Park in Cedar-Riverside, removing noxious plants, planting edible bushes, weeding, woodchipping and installation of three tables, two with games painted on them by local artists with KJ Starr of West Bank Business Association;
  • outreach to the Asian and Pacific Islander community, specifically Hmong and Lao households, to increase awareness of the Green Zones and home energy saving opportunities with organizer Phitz Nantharath
  • a series of seven community listening sessions for Way of The Root Farm - a North Minneapolis based, urban agritechnology project - with Ini Augustine of Technologist Computers
  • creation of a storytelling tool to increase engagement in Southside Green Zones work with Kowsar Mohamed of EcoSystemX;
  • youth employment in Northside community gardens and regenerative urban agriculture with Patsy Parker of Growing North Minneapolis;
  • engagement of Northside Green Zone residents in the creation of a community resiliency hub and microgrid with Jamez Staples of Renewable Energy Partners
