Youth Participate in Manufacturing Day Event

mfg day

In celebration of Manufacturing Month, twenty Minneapolis Transitions Plus high school students participated in Youth Manufacturing Day on October 27. This  virtual event featured H&B Elevators, a Minneapolis manufacturing company located at 3000 North Washington Avenue. The event kicked off with a virtual company tour, narrated by company CEO Jashan Eison. The tour featured a “behind the scenes” look at this growing, local company producing world-class elevator cabs. The students enjoyed learning about the company’s roots in Minneapolis, its evolution and growth. A high point included photos and examples of H&B Elevators installed products, and students were particularly impressed with the company’s work on the Minnesota State Capital building’s beautiful elevator cab.  Mr. Eison provided information on careers at his company, including entry-level roles and on-the-job training opportunities. Several students reported they plan to apply for open positions in the near future.

Students then had the opportunity to assemble a mini elevator cab kit, which had been delivered in advance to their homes. Kits were fabricated at H&B Elevators and are miniature replicas of full-size products. Students followed a YouTube assembly video, created by H & B Elevator, along with a set of blueprints. One student had never used a screwdriver before, but teamed up with her mom to successfully assemble the kit. Another student termed the activity "challenging but fun."  Elevator kits included a Manufacturing Month T shirt as a reminder of this exciting event.

Minneapolis Job Seekers Get Access to Technology!

We are all doing things differently these days, from working remote to training and attending school online, all of which require reliable access to technology. Libraries and computer labs, which previously offered access to computers, are now closed or have very limited access due to the pandemic.

With this critical need in mind, the City of Minneapolis sponsored a computer distribution event on September 23, at the South Minneapolis CareerForce Center. One hundred low-income Minneapolis residents were provided with a desktop computer package including a web cam, internet adapter, monitor, mouse and keyboard. The computer packages are ideal for taking online coursework, training and job search activities.

The event was held in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and PCs for People, a non-profit organization that refurbishes donated computers. The City of Minneapolis began donating City-owned computers to PCs for People in 2018. Since that time, the City has donated 630 computers earmarked for redistribution to Minneapolis residents.
