Read the Report on COVID-19’s Impact on The Arts

Map showing COVID's impact on the arts

The coronavirus has had a devastating impact on America’s arts sector. Since the first U.S. case was reported on January 20, 2020 cancellations and closings are taking place at thousands of arts organizations across the country, and two-thirds of the nation’s artists are now unemployed. Americans for the Arts leads the three premier national studies tracking the human and financial impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on the arts. Read the report here.

This data reflects the effects of summer cancellations and re-openings not taking place until fall or late. Financial losses to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations is estimated to be $8.4 billion. 96% of organizations have cancelled events since the onset of the pandemic (a loss of 325 million admissions). 50% of organizations have cancelled events into September 2020 (7% until 2021). 12% have already re-opened, 47% have no target date for re-opening (10% never closed).

Provide Information on the National COVID-19 Arts Survey

Please complete the Americans for the Arts revised COVID-19 survey for organizations. It still collects the critical up-to-date estimates that we need for our collective advocacy efforts. However, we’ve removed less relevant questions and added short sections on re-opening plans and the impact of the racial equity movement. You can keep up with the survey results by visiting the project dashboard as well as by downloading a handy 1-page summary of all our COVID-19 impact research.

Visual Arts Fund at Midway Contemporary Arts Announces Community Emergency Relief Grants

Midway Contemporary Arts Community Emergency Relief Grants logo

Sparked by the murder of George Floyd, the world joined Minneapolis in an unprecedented reckoning with centuries of systemic and structural racism. In the midst of peaceful protests, destruction of property, violent police response, and an ongoing pandemic, people across the globe are watching Twin Cities artists respond to racial injustice through their artwork. Many have painted now-iconic murals on boarded-up windows; others are volunteering, organizing relief efforts, advocating for their communities, and taking action to advance difficult conversations while developing new work and seeking opportunities to further their artistic practices. Much of the artistic labor of artists of color, and Black and Indigenous artists in particular, often goes uncompensated. This disparity, paired with the tremendous economic losses the pandemic has inflicted on freelancers and artists with day jobs, has created unprecedented stress and uncertainty within the arts community.

In response, Midway Contemporary Arts offers $10,000 in emergency relief grants to artist-organized projects through its Visual Arts Fund (VAF) with funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Funding will support projects within the support artist-organized projects within the neighborhoods most impacted by the recent unrest, where communities are advocating for change.

The VAF Community Relief Grant program will offer $10,000 grants to 10 artist-organized projects that serve artists and communities in North Minneapolis and areas of South Minneapolis and St. Paul. Project proposals must name two Co-Lead Organizers who live within Hennepin and Ramsey counties; priority will be given to projects with Black, Indigenous, and POC Lead Organizers living and working within the eligible neighborhoods.

Check for eligibility and application details.

Webinar on Demand: Dissolving and Merging Cultural Organizations

As the economic effects of COVID-19 wear on, some organizations are wondering whether they might be able to better serve their mission by joining forces with other like-minded organizations. Others are wondering if a future is even possible. This webinar from the Colorado Office of Film Television and Media will explore various approaches to merging or dissolving organizations, and delves into the difficult considerations that some of our state’s cultural organizations are now having to make.
