City of Lakes

Dear Neighbor,

Yesterday I joined many of you by taking part remotely in the Minneapolis memorial services for George Perry Floyd.

Minneapolitans are not alone- people around the world are reeling from this trauma with tremendous anger and grief.  George Floyd’s life was precious and it mattered.  He mattered to so many people, and should be alive today.  His memorial helped us to reaffirm our collective mission to build racially equitable systems- in all areas of our community.

There are a number of things below I wanted to update you on before the weekend.  It’s been a long two weeks. As we think about moving forward, a constituent reflected this in an email to me today about the transformational change needed in response to George Floyd’s death. And I thought it a perfect characterization of how I feel at his moment as well. It pertains to so many things. I offer it as we center our hearts on helping this great city recover from compounded trauma, and especially those that have endured great suffering.

In so many ways, we have the heart and human resources in Minneapolis to pull off something miraculous and standard-setting. My first feelings were something like "why here?" And then I faced the sobering realizations about our Northern Jim Crow: "of course here." And now, pushing through to hope, I imagine, "thank god here."

Be well,

Linea
