Dr Osterholm on COVID-19: "We're not driving this tiger, we're riding it."

Portrait of Dr. Michael Osterholm

Dr. Michael Osterholm, the U of M's internationally renowned epidemiologist, met with arts people via Zoom this week to answer questions about how the social distancing required to slow the spread of the virus is impacting the arts community.

"We miss you. We miss you. The arts are critical to what makes us who we are," he began, admitting that "I made a guest appearance in all three acts of Wicked on Broadway a few years ago."

With arts activities halted across the state since mid-March, and many artists and arts organizations anxious to reopen, the interview was eye opening and sobering. Of note was his focus on how the virus spreads through the air - a question for arts organizations whose activities generally are indoors in buildings with HVAC systems.

"We're not driving this tiger, we're riding it" was his most memorable phrase, meaning that we don't actually know how it will behave, when the next waves of infection will come, or how bad it will be. He did say he thought we would be dealing with the virus "for years" and that "you have to plan to hunker down for a while."

2020 Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act

Minnesota Humanities Center logo

The Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC), through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, has received $500,000 to provide grants to Tribal Nations and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations (libraries, arts organizations, museums, historical societies, and cultural organizations) in Minnesota who have a commitment to, and history of, humanities programming and are experiencing financial distress due to COVID-19.

Applicants may request up to $20,000. Requested funds may be used towards organizational health through a period of financial disruption or financial loss due to COVID-19.

All applicants will be given a funding status update within 10 business days after their application is submitted. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all the funds have been awarded, and no later than September 30, 2020.

They are prioritizing funding for applicants who often face systemic barriers to institutional funding streams, including organizations:

  • Whose budgets are less than $500,000
  • Serving communities including but not limited to:
    • People of color
    • Indigenous peoples
    • People who identify as LGBTQ+
    • People with disabilities
    • Neurodiverse people
    • People who identify as immigrants and/or refugees
    • People whose first (or only) language is not English
    • Veterans
  • Whose board, leadership, and decision-makers are reflective of those they serve

Nonprofit Personnel Strategies Beyond PPP

Minnesota Council of Nonprofits logo

Did your nonprofit receive a PPP loan? What's next?

Many nonprofits have taken advantage of the much needed Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and forgiveness. Unfortunately for some nonprofits, the financial relief of PPP is only temporary.

Nonprofit Personnel Strategies Beyond PPP: Where Finance and HR Meet will focus on personnel strategies and related financial effects for nonprofits who are faced with ongoing questions about service continuity, cost reduction, possible layoffs, program closures, and organizational survival. How does your organization instill its values into hard choices about personnel cost reduction, decisions about who gets furloughed or has hours reduced, and if and how and when to bring your staff back together?

Join the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and Clifton Larson Allen as we consider various approaches to staffing as we manage through the fallout of the pandemic and look forward to gradual reopening.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 9 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

REGISTRATION COST: $45 for MCN members / $65 for nonmembers

Survey for Self-Insured Nonprofits

National Council of Nonprofits logo

Is your organization one of the 100,000 or more nonprofits or governmental entities that has elected to self-insure under your state unemployment compensation system? Is your organization now facing burdensome payments to the state due to coronavirus-related layoffs and furloughs? The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, along with other state and national nonprofit allies, is advocating for relief from crippling unemployment costs. Now, we ask your help in identifying the problems and solutions, as well as a path towards new thinking on this issue. Please take this confidential survey.

The results from this survey will help nonprofits advocate for legislative and regulatory fixes that benefit organizations and their missions.

Americans for the Arts Annual Convention and Public Art & Civic Design Conference

American for the Arts Annual Conference June 23 - 25 2020 logo

We have more work to do. This week shows us we need to advocate for, lift up, and stand beside the artists, cultural activists, and arts professionals who work toward changing long-standing systems of power. As arts and culture leaders, racial equity and justice need to be part of every aspect of our work.

At the 2020 Annual Convention and Public Art & Civic Design Conference, it is more important than ever that our field can come together to confront the systems of racism and injustice in our communities in this moment. As the pandemic disproportionately affects people of color and widens inequality, we also need to center racial justice in our recovery efforts and beyond.

This year's speakers are activists and leaders in social justice, using the arts as a tool for positive change. Join us in learning, committing to change, and working to transform our communities this June 23-25.

CareerForce is here to support LGBTQ+ communities as they look to secure employment.

Sign up to engage with a handful of employers with employment opportunities across Minnesota who have been selected because of their track record of inclusion and support of LGBTQ+ employees. Everyone deserves to show up authentically at work, and CareerForce is congregating inclusive and LGBTQ+ supportive employers so that job seekers don't have to. It can be difficult to assess whether or not a prospective employer has the tools or insight to support your identity when looking for work.
