Dear neighborhood and community leaders,
Last night, we watched the pain and trauma that so many in our communities are feeling play out in the streets of our city. While I don’t have the details of last night's events, I know they are the result of pain and will go on to cause more pain. This pain and trauma has a profound impact on our work as a department and your work as a community leader.
We work together every day to build trust and create strong, positive relationships between communities and the City government. Today, this task seems Herculean. Like you, our night and day has been spent receiving phone calls from residents, business owners and community partners expressing their pain, fear, hurt and anger. Others, myself included, struggle to find words.
I know there are days when we may feel isolated, but our work is never done in isolation. Our work, like yours, is guided by the vision of a community that celebrates all, supports all and values all. I know we will work through this together.
As we work to heal and seek justice in our communities, we must do so in a way that is restorative for those communities who are in pain. Last night’s destruction has affected many of the same communities who have experienced trauma and those who have been hit hard by the COVID-19 economic and health crises.
These are difficult times, and I believe they may continue for a while. My hope is that we find the space and capacity to continue supporting each other through this with care and intentionality.
Right now, my thoughts are with you and with our community. Take care of yourself, your loved ones and your community. As always, feel free to reach out to me as well.
Thank you very much for your time and contributions.
Regards,
David Rubedor
