Lighting designer Cha See (one in two, What to Send Up When It Goes Down) and scenic designer Kimie Nishikawa (The Headlands, The Revolving Cycles Truly and Steadily Roll'd) have teamed to help support immigrant theatre artists financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. With a campaign goal of $20,000, the fund will release $500 micro grants to as many artists impacted by theatre closures and cancellations as possible.

See and Nishikawa, who are both immigrant designers based in Brooklyn, created the fund after seeing a need among freelance OPT- and O1-visa holders working in the theatre. While legally allowed to work, visa holders do not have the same access to state unemployment benefits. You can donate and learn more here.

As the disrupting impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world for ever, mission-driven organizations are facing some very tough decisions ahead. While there is no doubt that emergency or disaster financial support is crucial, it is only a temporary solution and not a panacea. Numerous organizations in the sector have been in survival mode even before this crisis and managed to buy time and sugarcoated their problems. As painful as might be, there is no better time for organizations to really evaluate the situation and finally act.

Dim Sum Dialogues logo

Join the International Chinese Fine Arts Council for an upcoming webinar. The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear that the fear of contracting disease has an ugly cousin: racism. As the coronavirus has spread through the United States, discrimination against Asian – along with Black and Latinx – communities have followed closely behind. Furthermore, the details of the pandemic’s impact has brought to light the striking wider economic disparities in various industries. Among those made vulnerable are members of the creative community – whose livelihoods are threatened by the disappearance of the gig and performance economy. Through Dim Sum Dialogues, we hope to facilitate a platform for social exchange through visibility, conversation, and unity.

Opportunities

Arts Endowment Our Town Program Funding

Screenshot from NEA Our Town video

The National Endowment for the Arts has posted Our Town funding guidelines.

Our Town is the National Endowment for the Arts’ creative placemaking grants program. Through project-based funding, we support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Successful Our Town projects ultimately lay the groundwork for systemic changes that sustain the integration of arts, culture, and design into local strategies for strengthening communities. These projects require a partnership between a local government entity and nonprofit organization, one of which must be a cultural organization; and should engage in partnership with other sectors (such as agriculture and food, economic development, education and youth, environment and energy, health, housing, public safety, transportation, and workforce development). Cost share/matching grants range from $25,000 to $150,000, with a minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount.

Application Deadline: August 6, 2020

Register for How to Apply and Prepare a Project Proposal Webinar on June 17 at 1:00 pm CDT.
