Couldn’t Attend the Minnesota Arts Town Halls in April? Listen to the Recordings

People sitting at a presentation

Thank you for your participation in last week’s Town Halls! The sponsors of these events are processing all that we heard and read, and have shared their initial reactions at this link, along with contact information and the recordings of both events.

We deeply appreciated hearing from the 600+ individual artists and arts organizations that attended the Minnesota Arts Town Halls held on Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30. We know that artists and the arts are absolutely crucial to getting us through this pandemic and the intention of these town halls was to bring forward community ideas, questions, needs, stories, hopes, and dreams for visioning our collective future together.

You can access the recording of both Town Halls below:

MSPIFF39 REDEFINED: A Virtual Film Festival May 14 - May 23

MSPIFF 39 Virtual Film Festival logo

MSP Film Society is pleased to announce the 39th Minneapolis St. Paul International
Film Festival (MSPIFF) is being relaunched as MSPIFF39 Redefined. This Virtual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival runs Friday, May 15 through Saturday, May 23, 2020 and will feature a robust selection of fiction and documentary films that were originally programmed for MSPIFF.

"Early in the year, MSP Film Society announced that “ADJUST YOUR VIEW” would be the theme for the 2020 MSPIFF —and how prophetic that tagline has become for all of us,” said Executive Director Susan Smoluchowski. “As heartbroken as our staff and community was by the turn of events, MSP Film Society is thrilled to relaunch our beloved festival as MSPIFF39 Redefined - A Virtual Film Festival. As we all continue to adjust our views, we hope you enjoy our efforts to help lift you away from the confines of the living room as we travel the globe together over nine days of story-telling magic.”

So far, there are over two dozen feature films confirmed, and will likely have around a dozen more added in the next few days. Six of those films were made by Minnesota filmmakers. They will be sharing all the film titles and schedule of events, as well as sharing a FAQ on how to watch from home, on their website on Monday May 11.

COVID-19 Learning Opportunities

Upcoming Webinar on May 12: Coast to Coast - Equity and Public Space

Coast to Coast logo

Coast to Coast is a weekly conversation which will take a deep dive into cities and explore ideas and insights on building engaged communities in a time of rapid change. The show is hosted by Lilian Coral and Lilly Weinberg, Knight directors in the Community and National Initiatives program.

On the debut episode of Coast to Coast, NYU professor and scholar Eric Klinenberg joined the hosts for a conversation. Together, they talked through the social implications for their communities and how to begin thinking about the rebuild after COVID-19.

For an in-depth look into Eric’s work and topics discussed during the program, check out the following resources:

On next week's Coast to Coast episode, they will explore equity and inclusivity during the COVID-19 recovery process. How do we take advantage of this moment in time to redefine the infrastructure of communities, and the role of quality and accessible public space? With extreme economic and operational challenges facing our cities, how can we ensure equity and inclusivity leads in recovery? This episode of Coast to Coast is hosted in partnership with Reimagining the Civic Commons and the High Line Network.

Upcoming Webinar on May 13: “How Community Development Organizations Change When They Embrace Arts and Culture”

PolicyLink logo

Please join Policylink for a webinar with leaders of community-based organizations and the artists with whom they have partnered to hear the stories and learn the lessons from their local strategies and internal transformation.

Community development organizations have taken up arts and culture strategies to build stronger connections with residents, create and enhance neighborhood identity and solidarity, and achieve better outcomes in local planning and policy. When these groups make arts and culture a significant part of their work, it changes them in important ways. In a time when social distancing and a massive public health crisis are forcing us to rethink how we operate nonprofit agencies and build connections among residents and stakeholders, we can learn from the experience of these organizations and the artists who are working with them.
