City of Minneapolis Announces COVID-19 Related Gap Fund

City of Minneapolis

The City’s new gap funding will help renters, small businesses and workers affected by the pandemic.

The funding will provide housing assistance to low-income renters who have lost income and forgivable, no-interest loans for small businesses.

“COVID-19 will leave no corner of our city untouched, but we know that some communities will be more impacted than others,” Frey said. “Thanks to the strength of our partnerships with non-profit leaders and neighboring governments, we’re moving forward with emergency housing and small business programs that prioritize residents who have been hit hardest by this pandemic. The measures that have been taken to protect public health have been absolutely necessary, and it’s also critical we keep the pilot light of our economy lit throughout this crisis.”

Full details are available online.

Funds can be used for staff salary support, fees for artists or contractual personnel, and facilities costs. The direct grants will not require a cost share or match and will be for a fixed amount of $50,000. Designated local arts agencies eligible to subgrant may request $100,000 or $250,000 for subgranting programs. The deadline to apply is April 22, 2020 with the earliest announcement of grant award or rejection by June 30.

A consortium of funders has announced the creation of the Artist Relief Fund, a $10 million national emergency relief fund for artists and creative workers that will provide $5,000 no-strings-attached grants. It is intended for anyone who earns income from their creative or artistic practice and who has also been affected by COVID-19.

  • Experiencing dire financial emergencies due to the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • 21 years of age or older;
  • Able to receive taxable income in the U.S. (e.g. citizen, green card holder, and/or permanent resident who can provide a W9 and SSN or ITIN);
  • Residing and working in the U.S. for the last two years;
  • Not a full-time employee, board member, director, officer, or immediate family member of any of the coalition partners;
  • Not previously awarded a relief grant from this fund.

As a research partner in this effort, Americans for the Arts is developing and deploying the COVID-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers, to capture the financial and creative impact of COVID-19 on creative workers, highlight the resiliency and generosity of the creative sector, and make sure that the 5 million creative workers in the U.S. are supported and heard during this ongoing crisis and the eventual recovery. This new survey is a counterpart to their ongoing Economic Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Arts and Cultural Organizations survey, which over 11,000 organizations have completed to date.
