Workforce Development

Workforce Development Continues

As we adjust to providing services virtually and remotely, our workforce system remains strong and continues to help people find employment, even in this uncertain era of Covid-19. Essential employers are still hiring and critical workers are still in need of employment. Whether it’s online resume review, individual training on LinkedIn, or career counseling, services are available for career seekers and employers. Job seekers can go to www.careerforcemn.com for a full listing of Minneapolis service providers. Employers are encouraged to list their job openings with www.minnesotaworks.net. Workers impacted by Covid-19 are encouraged to visit www.uimn.org for updated Unemployment Insurance information.

We continue to plan for and adjust the Step Up summer experience for youth as we adapt the model to the changing work environment and social distancing guidelines. We will keep you up to date as we learn more.

Visit the City of Minneapolis’ Coronavirus Update page for current resources for community, workers and businesses.  Additionally, a specific page for Worker Resources can be found at: www.minneapolismn.gov/coronavirus/workers.  Information and resources will be updated frequently so feel free to check back to these pages and share with others.

Youth Logo Winner and Update on Tech Month

Tech Month logo

New Minneapolis Tech Month Logo created by Elian Hernandez

At the beginning of 2020, the City announced a challenge for Minneapolis youth in grades 6-12 to design the 2020 Tech Month Logo. The winning design was created by Elian Hernandez, a 9th grade student at Edison High School. He received $1,000 for his design and two runners-up were each awarded $250 for their entries.

Minneapolis Tech Month was schedule for April but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to bring you Tech Month later this year. The goal of Minneapolis Tech month is to raise awareness about the training and career options available in the tech sector, particularly focused at young adults and underemployed job seekers. During the month of April, the City and its many community partners host and highlight events related to tech – from info sessions to hands-on activities – all geared to inspire more people to consider careers in IT.

Local Analysis of Unemployment Insurance Statistics

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has been releasing Unemployment Insurance Statistics on a weekly basis since March 16. This provides very up-to-date information on who has been impacted by the COIVD-19 pandemic and resulting economic slowdown.

As of April 15:

  • 112,377 Hennepin County residents filed for unemployment insurance
  • 255,515 Twin Cities (seven county) residents filed for unemployment insurance
  • 435,439 Minnesota residents filed for unemployment insurance

DEED has made additional information available for the seven-county metro area. The tables below compare UI claims to the latest metro labor force data available (2018). The Difference % column reflects the proportion of UI claims to the 2018 labor force. For example, in 2018 9.3% of the metro labor force was 20-24, but 12.6% of UI claims have come from that age group. The data shows that younger workers are feeling the impact more than older workers. The difference is even greater for those with a HS or Associate Degree vs Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

A similar comparison can be made across occupations in the metro. Food Preparation & Serving occupations have had the worst job losses by a huge margin. Additional occupations with higher job losses include Arts, Design, Entertainment & Media, Construction & Extraction, Healthcare Support, and Personal Care & Service. These correlate with the industries that have been closed such as restaurants, elective procedures in hospitals, salons, and public events such as concerts and sports. Professional occupations have been less impacted,
