Transgender Equity Council Updates

In the past few weeks, the Transgender Equity Council has tabled at the Community Connections Conference and at opening night of the History Theatre’s Superman Becomes Lois Lane premiere. We’re working on advertising the City’s gender inclusivity training for employees, researching the potential mis-reporting of gender identity-based hate crimes data, and spreading the word about how important it is to fill out the census. Want to join any of this work, or just join us for a meeting and see what’s going on?

We meet second Thursdays of the month from 5-7 PM, meeting locations are always announced on the LIMS calendar.

CURA

Seeking applications for Housing Stability Grants

Too many people in the Twin Cities region do not have access to safe, healthy, affordable, and reliable housing. In particular, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) communities, people with disabilities, and low-wealth communities face barriers to this critical resources. Market conditions have shown that the housing market does not work for most low-income people, so solutions may require questioning long held assumptions, creating innovative solutions, and attempting new ideas to address housing stability.

To address these challenges and identify solutions, the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) and the Alliance for Metropolitan Stability (the Alliance) will issue Housing Stability Grants to support BIPOC communities, people with disabilities, and low-wealth communities working to build power and advance systems and policy changes at the local level.

Please visit CURA's website for more details on this grant opportunity.

Hispanic Advocacy and Community Empowerment through Research (HACER)

Talking it Through

HACER’s mission is to provide the Minnesota Latino community with the ability to create and control information about itself in order to affect critical institutional decision-making and public policy.

The Talking it Through program was designed to create a dialogue between Latino youth and police officers. HACER has long been aware of the issues that Latino youth, and youth of color in general, have with the police. Many youth of color have had to deal with racial profiling and discrimination from police officers, which has led to a vicious cycle of distrust between both parties. HACER wanted to open a dialogue between police officers and Latino youth, in the hopes of improving this trust. The Talking it Through report details the informative session and interactive dialogue session held between community members and police officers. Please visit HACER's website for more information on the organization and to get involved.
