Council Member's Message

At the end of December, the City Council approved the 2020 budget with key investments that will forge real and positive change for our city. These investments are additional resources that build on past commitments and reflect the priorities embodied in our adopted City Mission:

Public Safety

We funded a new recruit class for the Police Department, to alleviate future drops in the number of active sworn officers due to retirements and attrition. In addition, we allocated funds for the Office of Violence Prevention, the Group Violence Intervention Initiative, an Intimate Partner Violence Intervention, and downtown public safety partnerships. This multi-pronged approach allows us to better ensure public safety by maintaining staffing levels while also getting at the root causes of violence.

Equity

In efforts to continue to protect vulnerable groups in our city, we increased funding for Aging Support Services; City-sponsored initiatives that strengthen engagement with cultural communities, including the African American, Latinx, East African, and Southeast Asian communities; dedicated Transgender Equity staff person. We have also instituted a requirement that any capital contributions the City makes to the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) for high-rise buildings must be conditioned upon installation of fire sprinklers and other fire suppression required under applicable codes for new construction.

Sustainability

We have dedicated funds toward drafting a new Sustainable Building Policy to ensure that the most advanced best management practices are being implemented in the design, build and retro-fit of our city's buildings. This matter is of keen interest to me, given that Ward One has been a leader in demonstrating sustainable building techniques through various developments like Hook & Ladder that incorporate Passive House technologies.

As I've said on several occasions before, budgets are a reflection of our values. I am pleased that this budget demonstrates our commitments to public safety, sustainability, and equity for all who live, work and play in Minneapolis.
