Council Member's Message

Ensuring the safety of everyone who moves around our city, by all modes, is a primary responsibility of municipal government. It's also the focus of our Vision Zero initiative, which seeks to eliminate deaths and life-altering injuries on our streets.

After intensive inter-departmental collaboration and community input, the 2020-2022 Vision Zero Action Plan was presented to the Transportation & Public Works Committee at the beginning of December. This plan outlines key strategies and actions to put this long overdue initiative into action. I invite you to visit https://lims.minneapolismn.gov/MarkedAgenda/TPW/1282 to read the final draft of the plan.

I also put forward an ordinance allowing us to establish speed limits within our city as a matter of flexibility and local control of our right-of-way. Public Works is directed to undertake a technical analysis of speed limit changes and present it to the Council by mid-March. Speed limit decisions will be guided by the extent to which they:

  • Support reaching the City's Vision Zero traffic safety goal of zero deaths or severe injuries;
  • Reflect the City's Complete Streets policy by improving access and comfort for people walking, biking, and taking transit;
  • Reflect projected future street use resulting from anticipated land use changes;
  • Support moving people and goods; and
  • Are reasonable, comfortable, and technically defensible.

I look forward to working diligently with Public Works and my Council colleagues in the coming months to ensure we have all the tools, strategies, and innovative approaches necessary to make our streets safer for all.
