H&B Elevators and Unison Comfort Technologies welcome Minneapolis students on National Manufacturing Day

Manufacturing Day Photo

Seventy-five Minneapolis high school students explored manufacturing careers at H&B Elevators and Unison Comfort Technologies, taking part in national “Manufacturing Day” Friday, October 5th.  Manufacturing Day tours and activities aim to raise awareness of the outstanding opportunities a career in manufacturing can provide by featuring specialized student experiences on-location at local companies. These students tested their skills at a “Big Ideas” Virtual Welding lab, followed blue prints to assemble scaled models of elevator cabs, toured manufacturing floors, and received information on careers available to them upon graduation. According to the National Association of Manufacturing, for every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, another $1.89 is added to the economy. That is the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector. For every one worker in manufacturing, four people secure employment in the production supply chain, or in the broader economy.

Unison Comfort Technologies is a manufacturer of products and components in the heating, ventilating and air conditioning industry. The company’s high-quality solutions are installed in applications where their customers work, learn, heal and play.  H&B Elevators is a manufacturer of passenger elevators based in north Minneapolis. Their products can be found all around the U.S. and in many parts of the world, including in U.S. Bank Stadium, the Minnesota State Capitol and the Burj Khalifa skyscraper.

City of Minneapolis Computers Find New Life with Minneapolis Residents

PCs for People

On October 17, PCs for People collaborated with community partners at 800 West Broadway to provide 150 low-income Minneapolis residents with high-quality, refurbished computers. Each recipient of a computer paid just $40 for a desktop computer package and was able to attend a free computer workshop to prepare them to best use the technology.

PCs for People is a local nonprofit dedicated to digital inclusion by giving access to affordable technology through the reuse of professionally refurbished computers. The computers distributed were donated from the City of Minneapolis and are earmarked for Minneapolis residents.

Access to technology is essential to educational success as well as workforce and community development.  A computer and internet connection means a student can do homework, a job seeker can apply for jobs online, an adult with disabilities can be socially connected and gain access health records, and an immigrant can connect to vital resources and stay connected with friends and family back home.

Employers Hiring People with Disabilities Roundtable

Roundtable

In a historically tight labor market, now is the time for more Minnesota employers to consider hiring people with disabilities. At an October event in CareerForce-North Minneapolis at 800 West Broadway , DEED Commissioner Steve Grove  recognized more than two dozen Minnesota employers, who are leading on this front, breaking down barriers and hiring people with disabilities. Now more Minnesota employers will do the same.

To help raise awareness about the essential contributions of employees with disabilities, Governor Walz declared October Employers Hiring People with Disabilities Month

Here’s more information from DEED to elevate Employers Hiring People with Disabilities Month.
