Creative Minneapolis Events in July

Creative Mpls logo

Creative Minneapolis is an initiative of the office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy facilitating events and activities that build an inclusive creative ecosystem. Over the years our research has demonstrated the impact and potential of this vital sector of our economy. We have been in conversation with many members of the creative community throughout our work and heard clearly that the government can do more to support the unique needs of the entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations that make up this sector.

We know that the creative economy is integral to the success of the city’s economic and social well-being. We also know that creative work is often made up of complex income streams from contract, freelance, and project-based work in both for-profit and non-profit settings, falling outside traditional norms of business planning and growth strategies. To address these challenges the office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy facilitated two Creative Minneapolis events to demonstrate and co-create a path forward for building a more robust and inclusive creative economy.

On July 16 Creative Minneapolis hosted an ecosystem building event for organizations that provide services and resources for artists, creative workers and arts organizations. The event was designed to build relationships and network across sectors so that organizations can better communicate with each other and collaborate. Many new connections were made as building owners connected with artist training programs and city agencies connected with film and media organizations.

On July 27 Creative Minneapolis partnered with the Mayor’s office for Black Business Week and FLOW Northside Arts Crawl to close Broadway from Lyndale to Aldrich, sponsor the performance stage and an arts market and host an arts resources tent. Inside the tent organizations such as the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, Arts Space, Forecast, and the MSP Airport Foundation provided information about their services, connected with Northside artists and creatives and had a great time! A huge thank you to the organizations, attendees, and volunteers who helped make the Creative Minneapolis events happen! We were thrilled that so many community members came out to learn about the resource providers and connect with the organizations.

Creative City Challenge International Indigenous Peoples Day at the Radical Playground, this Saturday, August 10

Radical Playground

2019 Creative City Challenge winner "Radical Playground" will be hosting community events at The Commons this summer. Check out the upcoming event:

Everyone is invited to immerse themselves in the interactive public art installation “Radical Playground,” now through August. The participatory art installation “Radical Playground” artists Candida Gonzalez and MaryAnne Quiroz invite participants to heal through play with whimsical interactive “alebrije”: animal sculptures inspired by dream creatures from the Caribbean, Mexico, the Pacific Islands and the Dakota and Anishinaabe peoples of Minnesota.

The artists intend “Radical Playground” to invite indigenous communities and communities of color to a space where they feel free to gather, to play, to heal. They want their project to bring a feeling of play, of free joy, of giving people’s bodies a break from stress and worry.

The Creative City Challenge is a program of the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy of the City of Minneapolis created in in collaboration with The Commons and Northern Lights.mn.

For information about these and other events happening at The Commons this summer visit The Commons website.

About ITS Fest: The 2019 iteration of ITS Fest (Intro To Success) will be conceptualized as “Reimagining our world”. Our “world”, is the Northside of Minneapolis, and our reimagining of it provides the ethos of the event. Through a block party-style structure we will utilize space design, activities, music, and art to communicate this reimagination of our community. We will address how we see ourselves, outside stereotypes of the Northside, and what we want to see flourish in our community.
