Minneapolis Black Business Week highlights and celebrates black owned businesses right here in Minneapolis.
Later this month, the City will celebrate the first ever Minneapolis Black Business Week. From July 19 – July 27, the City and partner organizations will be hosting events to highlight and support black-owned businesses throughout the city.
Economic inclusion is central to the City's goals, including reducing the current racial disparities in business ownership in Minneapolis. Minneapolis Business Week highlights the contributions that black-owned businesses make to the richness and vibrancy of our community, promotes spending with black-owned businesses, and offers opportunities to connect businesses to the resources they need to thrive.
Black Business week has something for everyone. If you are a black business owner, you can sign up to have your business highlighted in the City's online directory, learn about business trends, discover what it takes to become a vendor with the City, expand your professional network and more. Everyone can participate by dining, shopping, and exercising at featured businesses; taking in a free movie screening at the Commons park; or enjoying art and entertainment at the Flow Northside Arts Crawl.

The first meeting of the City’s Upper Harbor Collaborative Planning Committee (CPC) was held on Wednesday, June 26 at NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center in north Minneapolis. The Minneapolis City Council appointed CPC members on May 17, 2019. The 17-person Committee is inclusive of the diversity of communities in north and northeast Minneapolis; the CPC is comprised of north and northeast Minneapolis residents, an owner of a business located in north/northeast Minneapolis, a representative of the Environmental Justice Coordinating Council (EJCC) and a representative of the Above the Falls Community Advisory Committee (AFCAC).
Through the rest of 2019 and into 2020, the Committee will advise the Upper Harbor redevelopment project team (City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board and the development team led by United Properties) on community engagement and work together to create the Coordinated Plan for redeveloping the 48-acre site along the riverfront in north Minneapolis.
Earlier this year, the City Council approved the Concept Plan for redeveloping the Upper Harbor site, which was previously operated as a barging terminal. The first phase of development is expected to include affordable housing, mixed-use development, riverfront parkland and an outdoor music performance venue. The more detailed redevelopment plan for the Upper Harbor site is expected to be reviewed by the City Council in the spring of 2020.
Throughout the summer, the Committee will work with the Upper Harbor redevelopment project team on community engagement, refining the first phase of development and visions for future development. The City is working with Pillsbury United Communities, who has an engagement grant from McKnight and will partner with the project team to develop engagement that will bring more people into the process.
Upper Harbor CPC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Robert J. Jones Urban Research Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC) at 2001 Plymouth Ave N.

Shadows at the Crossroads, a new artwork by artists Seitu Jones, Ta-coumba Aiken and Rosemary Soyini Vinelle Guyton, was recently dedicated at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The work is a continuation of Shadows of Spirit, a project commissioned by the City of Minneapolis for Nicollet Mall in 1992, and conserved and reinstalled in 2017. Shadows at the Crossroads consist of seven shadow pavement sculptures celebrating important figures in Minnesota history, including Maḣpiya Wicaṡṭa, the leader of a village on Bde Maka Ska in the 1800’s, and the late Kirk Washington, Jr., a beloved Northside Minneapolis Poet.
The artists traced the shadows of community members and worked with the Walker Teen Arts Council to select the silhouettes that make up the project. Poet Rosemary Soyini Vinelle Guyton composed the lines of verse that appear within many of the sculptures. Embedded in the sidewalks throughout the Sculpture Garden, the seven shadows can be discovered by pedestrians as they make their way through the park. The shadow honoring Kirk Washington points in the direction of North Minneapolis and is only visible when it rains.
The original seven Shadows of Spirit on Nicollet Mall and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden can be found in the City’s interactive public art map.
