Council Member's Message

Between this winter and spring's record-setting precipitation and the flooding our state experienced as a result, stormwater is on the minds of many of us. This topic is of particular interest to me in my dual roles as Chair of Minneapolis' Transportation & Public Works Committee and Chair of the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization Board (MWMO). Uncontrolled stormwater not only presents a risk for flooding and damage to homes and public infrastructure, but also threatens the ecological health of our Mississippi River. That's why I'm pleased that Minneapolis is partnering with MWMO on the Northeast Stormwater Management Initiative to implement cutting-edge stormwater management infrastructure in Ward One over the next couple of years. Check out the recap of our recent forum and visit https://www.mwmo.org/management/planning/northeast-stormwater-management-initiative/ to learn more about this exciting initiative.

In other water-related news, the Minneapolis Parks Foundation announced the launch of a RiverFirst signature project: the Great Northern Greenway Overlook. This exciting initiative is the next step in realizing a much needed east-west trail network that will connect Northeast and North Minneapolis across the river. This trail follows the "Environmental Education Corridor" linking Edison High School and Nellie Stone Johnson Community School that was identified in the RiverFirst plan in 2012. I applaud the Minneapolis Parks Foundation for this bold step and look forward to future progress on this important connection between communities.
