Community members scroll through the Imagining Equity Crankies: Minneapolis' Past and Present during last year's Minneapolis 2040 engagement events. (Source: City of Minneapolis)
During the Minneapolis 2040 engagement events, community members interacted with an artist-designed engagement tool called Imagining Equity. The Imagining Equity Crankies are visual scrolls that illustrate Minneapolis’ past and present through a racial equity lens.
Five-year-old to eighty-year-old community members scrolled through the crankies during the engagement events. As they scrolled, each participant interpreted the visual narratives of Minneapolis’ past and present. An online version of the crankies was created for participants who could not make it to the in-person events. The videos are available with a voice-over narration that explains the images. This way, the crankies can be viewed by a wider audience, as well as have some context behind the imagery.
The artists commissioned to create the Imagining Equity Crankies and voice-over for the online version were Molly Van Avery and Mike Hoyt.
In 2018, a total of 1,546 Minneapolis households received counseling, homebuyer education and financial wellness services through the Minnesota Homeownership Center. (Source: City of Minneapolis)
Minnesota has one of the worst racial disparities in homeownership; 23% of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) households are homeowners, in contrast to 77% of white households that are homeowners.
Minneapolis Homes has a goal of reducing racial disparities in homeownership through programs and products. One approach is building homebuyer capacity and education through financial support of the Minnesota Homeownership Center (HOC) and its network of counseling providers. In 2018, a total of 1,546 Minneapolis households received counseling, homebuyer education and financial wellness services through the HOC. Of the total served, 78% were BIPOC and 85% were low-to-moderate income households who are at or below 80% of area median income.
Households that receive financial wellness and homebuyer counseling through HOC are eligible for the City’s Homeownership Opportunity Minneapolis (HOM) program that offers up to $10,000 in homebuyer assistance for purchase of a home in Minneapolis.
On March 29, Mayor Frey issued an official proclamation that April 2019 would be designated Tech for Tomorrow: Minneapolis Tech Month in the city. The goal of offering 20+ engaging tech related events quickly blossomed to nearly 60 events throughout the month. Thirty-six partners – including employers, community based organizations, trainers and libraries – hosted events during the month of April.
Tech Month focused on three training tracks:
Training and Employment: Information sessions on available training and how to get into a tech career; hiring events; networking and professional forums, speakers and tech workshops.
Addressing the Digital Divide: Access to low cost computer equipment, internet access and workshops to help repair broken devices.
Community Tech Resources: Training and access to professional associations, Fintech and entrepreneur workshops, AI and Virtual Reality demos, and tech training for kids.
Impact:
- Fifty-nine events were held during Tech Month: 37 Adult Focused Events; 14 Events for Youth; 8 events served both youth and adults.
- Over 40 individuals were able to purchase low-cost computers and/or internet access through PCs for People (the City donates outdated equipment to organizations like PCs for People that refurbish the items and provide them to low-income community members at a reduced cost).
- Dozens of volunteers and hundreds of community members engaged in one or more of the events.
The Diverse Founders Fellowship provides deserving entrepreneurs from underrepresented communities – such as women, people of color, immigrants, veterans, LGBTQ and those with disabilities – access to Fueled Collective, a local coworking and community space.
Fueled Collective will select a cohort of five fellows and grant them each 6 months of full-time membership for free. Aside from resources and connections, the membership gives you:
- 24/7 access to Fueled Collective’s Downtown Minneapolis location.
- Business-hours access to our other locations,
- Admission to all Fueled Collective members-only events and activities.
- Ability to invite guests (investors, partners, etc.) for meetings and collaboration.
Fueled Collective is a community space that brings together work life, nightlife, events and most importantly, people. In this space, people can work in an entrepreneurial community, connect at the social club or host events and meetings that make a real impression.
