Council Member's Message

Minneapolis’ creative economy is a key factor in the overall picture of our city’s economic strength and is of special importance to the First Ward, given our location in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. That’s why I have been keenly supportive of and closely involved in the city’s efforts to evaluate the impact of the arts through our Creative Vitality Index, a report that tracks and measures in a very deliberative way the role of artistic and creative work in our economy.

Our 2018 Minneapolis Creative Index was recently presented and I urge you to take a look at the evolving picture it presents. Click HERE to read the report. It expands upon the findings of earlier reports, while adding a fascinating new dimension by taking a close look at land use, a lens that complements our recent Minneapolis 2040 plan. The report also examines employment data in greater depth, including job numbers and growth and the disparities that currently exist for women and people of color.

Some interesting highlights of the report include:

  • Creative sector job growth in Minneapolis increased by 14.4% from 2006 to 2016.
  • Creative jobs make up 4.9% of all Minneapolis jobs, compared with 2.9% of jobs nationally.
  • 27% of all creative jobs in the state are located in Minneapolis.
  • In 2016, creative industry sales in Minneapolis were nearly $5 billion.

In related news, national advocacy organization Americans for the Arts will be holding their annual conference in the Twin Cities this June and will be highlighting our Arts District as part of their ARTventures tours. See the story below for more information about this exciting conference, which will spotlight the artistic energy of the entire Twin Cities.
