Council Member's Message

After a more than two year process, the City Council has approved a 2040 Comprehensive Plan for submission to the Metropolitan Council. While no plan accommodates all objectives, I believe we now have policy direction that does generally support the city’s goals for healthy growth, increased sustainability and opportunity for all. Some prime objectives that were important to me were: crafting modifications to the density requirements for interior neighborhoods that were mindful of community context; encouraging development along transit corridors; emphasizing protections for our arts districts; preserving and protecting our city’s employment generating areas; and developing and implementing measures for combatting the effects of climate change, such as enhanced stormwater management.  There is no question but that Minneapolis is seeing increased population growth that is projected to continue in the next decade and I believe this plan positions us to grow in a fair, sustainable and thoughtful manner.

The broad framework of the Comp Plan will be implemented through the details of policies yet to be drafted, such as the Transit Action Plan and the Zoning Code map. That is where the block by block details get hammered out. I look forward to the next step of this process, which is to craft revisions to our Zoning Code that will allow for orderly growth and development while also maintaining the character and context of our neighborhoods, enhancing our economic vigor and ensuring a healthy environment. I have appreciated the engaged, thought-provoking and wide-ranging input I’ve received so far and I urge you all to continue to participate in the next phase.
