Dear Neighbor,

I first want to thank everyone who attended any of the conversations held in each and every 13th ward neighborhood to discuss the second draft of the Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan. We had stellar turnout and attendees had valuable input and insightful comments. I am appreciative of each neighborhood association, their boards and their coordinators for allowing us to attach these conversations to their regular monthly meetings, or even setting up special ones, and for coordinating the logistics.

After completing this series of conversations on the Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan I wanted to provide a brief recap. I organized these, in collaboration with all 13th Ward neighborhood associations, to garner feedback and summarize some of the more popular and newsworthy changes to the draft plan and provide an update on the plan in general. My aim is, and has been, to continue to allow residents an opportunity to provide me with their feedback and opinions of the plan even though the public comment period has ended so that I may continue to be an advocate.

As I have shared, the second draft of this plan leaves a great deal of my broader policy requests, specific requests for change in our ward, and process requests yet unanswered. And I cannot stand before you and say that the changes that were made to this second draft reflect the vast amounts of feedback received on the first draft. I can share that they do not reflect the feedback that I have received, at this point.

That is why, at these meetings, I challenged those in attendance who find issue with this draft, have comments, or support specific items to not only come to one of the public hearing opportunities listed below, but to also bring a friend, colleague or acquaintance from another part of the city with them. While I know that folks in Southwest Minneapolis have been very involved and vocal in their thoughts on the plan, I do not know that the same can be said about the rest of the city. So, please help bring other voices that maybe reflect your own or come with a different perspective to the conversation. Please consider taking the time to attend this next hearing, so that Council Members from other wards may directly hear your voices as well.

Since the second draft came out, I have been meeting regularly with individuals who can directly impact this process going forward. I have been advocating for incremental amendments to this plan that I believe are good for the city as a whole. I will not stop offering specific ideas and recommendations for improvement, and I will continue to seek outside review and advice.
