This daylong workshop is specifically designed and tailored to support BIPOC Activists in Minneapolis, MN and surrounding communities. Activism is a collective need and response by community to heal itself. In our efforts to promote and support this instinctive historical practice we anticipate that participants may notice uncomfortable thoughts, feelings and possibly memories emerge as they learn and internalize new information and engage in courageous conversations. Throughout this experiential workshop participants will be invited to be open to new experiences and to practice taking risks with themselves first and then with others.
Objectives
- Support the sustainability of BIPOC voices
- Empower activist voices as advocate for communal growth
- Build a stronger activist community
- Name/identify individual strengths to combat trauma and mental health challenges
- Develop individual self-care plans

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Hosts Learning Session Focus Groups
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation
Board is committed to providing safe places for children and adults to gather
and play. Since the July 10 incident at
Minnehaha Falls, there has been an internal work group comprised of the
superintendent, commissioners, staff and consultants who have discussing short
and long-term strategies related to safety and park policing. This month we are
starting a series of Learning Sessions for youth and community leaders. The Learning
Sessions will provide an opportunity for the MPRB to listen, learn,
acknowledge, educate and gather public input on the desired level of park
police service needed to serve our communities.

We hope to
gather a group of people from a wide range of experiences and viewpoints, who
have been advocating for these conversations and who will help shape future
public Learning Sessions.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation
Board is committed to working with the community to identify ways to improve
park safety. Findings from these Learning Sessions will be reported to the
Board in December and will inform development of recommendations in a Park
Police Service Level Plan to be drafted in 2019.
Other initiatives being developed
related to park safety and park policing include expanded youth programming,
formation of a park police advisory council, and development of legislative
agenda language to build awareness and strengthen laws and/or penalties related
to reporting inaccurate information to law enforcement. All of these strategies
will include community engagement and discussions. The strategies are being
approached, and will be evaluated, through a lens of equity.
Housing Forum: Local Government Strategies for Preventing Displacement
Lower income households have always faced the threat of involuntary displacement, but that threat is becoming more acute in the Twin Cities Metro area as the perfect storm of low vacancy rates, escalating rents and upscaling of naturally occurring affordable apartments drives families from their homes. What can local governments do to protect people?

September 21, 3-4:30 p.m.
Carlson School of Management Honeywell Auditorium 321 19th Ave S
Presenters from the Housing Justice Center will talk about a report it just issued discussing six areas where local policies and strategies can help preserve the affordability of at-risk housing and can keep low income residents in their homes, or at least protect them when they have to move. The report draws on innovative practices adopted both locally and across the county.

About ReCAST Minneapolis
The Resilience in Communities After Stress & Trauma (ReCAST) Minneapolis Program is funded through a multi-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). ReCAST Minneapolis is intended to assist high-risk youth and families, and promote resilience and equity in communities that have recently faced civil unrest through the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention and community youth engagement programs, as well as linkages to trauma-informed behavioral health services. SAMHSA created the ReCAST Program to support communities that have lived through demonstrations of mass protest in response to police-involved shootings of unarmed African-American males.
