Update on Work Groups

An update from Steven Gallagher, project coordinator for Neighborhoods 2020:

As the project coordinator, I will be sending weekly updates on the progress of our important work. In addition to these updates, you can discuss Neighborhoods 2020 directly with me either at my community office hours (listed in the section below) or by phone at 612-673-2905.

Work groups completed their second meetings last week after having completed an orientation, an equity and inclusion training by Strategic Diversified Initiatives and creating working agreements to guide the work going forward. Below are the highlights from each work group.

1. Program Guidelines, Funding and Implementation

  • Reviewed the history of guidelines and funding.
  • Discussion with Mark Ruff, CFO of the City of Minneapolis: Reviewed projected five-year City budgeting plans.
  • Bob Cooper, Manager of Finance: Spoke about previous agreements between neighborhoods and the City.
  • Next steps: Identify the needs of neighborhood organizations and the City while looking at best practices. We will be formulating guidelines and frameworks for expectations of stakeholders.

2. Governance Advisory Structure for Neighborhood and Community Engagement

  • Discussion with David Rubedor, Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations: Reviewed the current governance structure of the Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission, its duties and actions. The group also identified the statutory requirements and actions of the Neighborhood and Revitalization Program Policy Board.
  • Next steps: Review other options, identify missed opportunities and ensure equitable representation.

3. Citywide Community Engagement Policy

  • Discussion with Rose Lindsay, Regulatory Services Community Engagement and Grants Manager: Identified best practices for community engagement with residents, neighborhood organizations and cultural communities. The group also identified other ways Regulatory Services can work with neighborhood organizations.
  • Next Steps: Create shared expectations for the City, neighborhood organizations and cultural communities.

Engagement Sessions

Each of the work groups are planning to hold dialogues with the community in the near future. Exact dates have not been set, but they are tentatively scheduled for late September or October. Engagement sessions will be held prior to the drafting of any recommendations.
