Dear Neighbor,

We are roughly one month removed from the end of the public comment period for the Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan. Since then I continue to receive feedback from constituents and have heard a wide range of concerns and input that 13th Ward residents would like to see addressed. While I want to assure you all that I will continue to lift up your voices as I share this feedback with Long Range Planning, I too have concerns about where this feedback is going and how it is going to be addressed in the second draft and communicated back to residents. As staff reworks the plan to incorporate feedback, they have not yet shared these changes with my office.  However, they appear to be on track to have the second draft out by the end of September, and indicate they will work with each individual office before its release.  They have also committed to us that there will be:

  • A brief document (about 3 pages) to highlight the broad changes made to the first draft
  • All 10,000+ comments received by the July 22nd deadline publicly available (note: I continue to advocate for release of these immediately)
  • Additional public hearings for residents to voice their opinions on the next draft.
  • An online document showing the full list of changes and what the original language was.

It is reasonable for me to believe that Southwest Minneapolis produced a high volume of this feedback on the first draft.  Much of it also came to me. This is in part because across the city, ours was an area of some of the most dramatic considerations in terms of land use and built form.  I will keep working to make sure this plan serves residents across the city, meets our long-term goals, and more carefully considers dramatic changes to the unique character of each and every neighborhood I serve.

Yours in service,

Linea
