SAMHSA and Technical Assistance Partners Visit Minneapolis

ReCAST SAMHSA Site Visit 2018

From July 16-17, ReCAST Minneapolis hosted on representative from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and two representatives from Now Is The Time Technical Assistance Center. Over the course of the two days, the team shared all of the work being done in year two and celebrated accomplishments, including the YPAR project, the mural installation and the Resilience Funds project.

This time was also used to uncover some of the challenges and learnings faced in year two. The team intends to use things discussed during these two days in planning the work for year three of the ReCAST Minneapolis grant.

Thurman Blevins Response

ReCAST joins with community in Minneapolis and the Twin Cities' area over the recent and tragic shooting of Thurman Blevins. He leaves behind a family who deeply loved and cared for him. Together with community, we grieve the fact that his name is now listed among the many individuals who have also suffered at the hands of officer involved shootings.

In order to support community during this time, the ReCAST team convened touch point calls immediately after the incident. We were present at the vigil and participated in connecting providers to resources that would support community healing efforts. Our staff was also present during the Race and Equity subcommittee meeting where community and family members voiced their grief over the shooting of their loved one. Since the shooting, we have continued to reach out to partners to let them know about the funding opportunities to deepen community wellness and healing as a result of the ongoing nature of violence against our communities.

About ReCAST Minneapolis

The Resilience in Communities After Stress & Trauma (ReCAST) Minneapolis Program is funded through a multi-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). ReCAST Minneapolis is intended to assist high-risk youth and families, and promote resilience and equity in communities that have recently faced civil unrest through the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention and community youth engagement programs, as well as linkages to trauma-informed behavioral health services. SAMHSA created the ReCAST Program to support communities that have lived through demonstrations of mass protest in response to police-involved shootings of unarmed African-American males.
