Council Member's Message

Tuesday, August 7, is National Night Out and I encourage you all to plan or participate in a neighborhood event that evening. Minneapolis is a leader in celebrating this special night. Last year we had 1361 registered NNO events and were ranked #1 in population centers of 300,000+. It's a great opportunity to meet new neighbors, re-engage with old ones and learn more about what's going on in our community. The City of Minneapolis offers tools and resources to help make your event extra-special, including a streamlined process for closing your street, flyer templates and more. See the story below for more information or visit http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/nno/.

I was pleased that we had a good turnout for the Comprehensive Plan Public Forum I hosted on June 14 at the Northeast Library. The discussion was lively and informed, with many questions for City planning staff. As was stated at the meeting, Minneapolis 2040 serves as a guiding document for future planning around transportation, housing, employment access and many other areas. All municipalities in the Twin Cities are required to provide the Metropolitan Council with an updated Comprehensive Plan every ten years. This time around, however, is the first time the City of Minneapolis has undertaken a significant engagement process to garner public input on our comprehensive plan. I encourage those of you who have not already done so, to read the draft plan and submit your comments. Visit https://minneapolis2040.com/ to access the plan. The public comment period ends July 22.

Our City has recently been rocked by the officer-involved shooting of Thurman Blevins. Violent deaths under any circumstances in our city represent a diminishment of our communal social fabric and their impact cannot be ignored. That's why I joined with my fellow Council Members to call for complete transparency, accountability and speed in the investigation into this most recent shooting. See the story below for more information about how to access public data related to this matter.
