Traffic Safety Community Meeting: 35W@94 - Downtown to Crosstown, June 27

The closures related to the 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project have presented a significant increase in traffic, congestion and safety concerns for commuters and residents in Ward 8.  Council Member Jenkins and Public Works staff welcome feedback from Ward 8 residents in developing traffic mitigation solutions that will better serve all commuters and help keep our neighborhoods safe.

What: Traffic Safety Community Meeting: 35W@94 - Downtown to Crosstown
When: Wed, June 27th, 6 - 7:30pm
Where: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 4055 Nicollet Ave

As MnDOT moves into the next stage of the 35W@94 reconstruction project, the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department is keeping a close eye on traffic as more vehicles move through our local streets. Our traffic team is working closely with our partners at MnDOT, Hennepin County, Metro Transit and Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA), as well as the Minneapolis Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol to respond quickly to problem areas.

The first few weeks of a major change like this can be unpredictable and once traffic settles into a regular pattern, City staff can best address the problem areas in a long-term way. So far, staff are seeing issues with speeding, congestion and drivers going the wrong way on local streets. The Public Works Department is committed to keeping and adding bike facilities, maintaining neighborhood parking as much as possible, and to providing a transit advantage to buses during the construction.

Some of the tools and techniques being used by the traffic team include:

  • MPD enforcement
  • Deployment of speed wagons by the Traffic Division (3 dedicated to the project area, 7 city-wide)
  • Adjustments to signal timing
  • Adding left turn arrows at key signal locations to facilitate higher turn volumes
  • Temporary curb extensions (for speed and traffic calming)
  • Temporary islands (for speed and traffic calming)
  • Temporary speed bumps
  • Diverters (for example the one at 2nd Avenue and 32nd Street)
  • Opening up intersection sight distance by removing a limited amount of parking

Additionally, Public Works is encouraging commuters to use alternate forms of transit to move vehicles off the roads. Metro Transit and MVTA have added 50 new bus trips across 10 routes to provide more frequent and reliable service. The City of Minneapolis has worked to prioritize bus traffic during the reconstruction project through traffic signals, bus only on and off ramps and signage. To encourage commuters to carpool, ABC ramps in partnership with Move Minneapolis is making parking spots available to verified carpools for $20 a month.

We are committed to working with partners and residents on these impacts to improve road conditions as much as possible.

Happy PRIDE Weekend! Minneapolis declares June 2018 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual Pride Month

Minneapolis has approved a resolution declaring June 2018 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual Pride Month in Minneapolis. The declaration coincides with the Twin Cities Pride celebration, which is held annually in June and is the largest outdoor festival in the city. The City encourages residents and visitors to participate in the numerous activities celebrating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month in the city and in the ongoing work of leading Minnesota toward full LGBT equality.

The City of Minneapolis has a long history of supporting LGBT rights. The resolution notes that in 2017 the City Council approved the creation of the Transgender Equity Council, which was intended to serve as an advisory board to the City and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board on matters of importance to the transgender community.

In 2014, Minneapolis was part of a partnership with the Minneapolis School District and numerous organizations that successfully advocated at the State Capitol for passage of the Safe and Supportive Minnesota Schools Act, which focuses on bullying prevention in Minnesota schools.

The City of Minneapolis has been steadfast in its commitment to full legal equality for same-sex couples, and in particular to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage, as well as a public and vocal proponent of the marriage equality statute passed in 2013 by the Minnesota State Legislature and signed by the governor.

In 1975 Minneapolis was the first city in Minnesota to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, a position subsequently adopted by numerous Minnesota cities and the State itself.

Members of the Minneapolis City Council will march in the Twin Cities PRIDE parade this Sunday, June 24th, at 11am.  We hope you will join us in solidarity of our LGBTQ communities!
