Mayor Frey and Southeast Asian Soccer Engagement Championship team 12 30 2017

The Southeast Asian Soccer Engagement Program 2017 winter season ended in January. Mayor Frey stopped by to present a championship trophy to  the winning team.

The Soccer Engagement Program is a collaboration between the City of Minneapolis and the Lao Assistance Center of Minnesota to both develop Southeast Asian leadership and build trust in government. At the Saturday soccer games, City departments engage with players and their families, providing important information and listening to community input. This season was sponsored by the Hawthorne Area Community Council and the Neighborhood and Community Relations department.

Free Trees for Green Zones!

City Tree Green Zone February 2018

If your organization is located in one of the City’s Green Zones in North Minneapolis or Philips & Cedar Riverside you may be eligible for free trees for your community! Trees increase shade and provide cooling, clean the air and create a healthier community for all.

The City of Minneapolis is seeking organizations with the capacity to pick up, deliver and plant trees for residents in the Green Zones. The City can also assist with this process if needed. Applications are open starting now until March 9. If you are selected, you will be able to pick up the trees on May 19, 20 or 21. Apply online or by contacting Izzy Ballet at Isabelle.ballet@minneapolismn.gov or 612-673-2193.

Rita's House for Homeless Youth Grand Opening

On January 18, neighbors and supporters gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Rita’s House – a project of The Bridge for Youth. Rita’s House provides housing for 18 to 21-year-olds who are homeless or at high risk of homelessness. The home is named for The Bridge’s founder, Sister Rita Steinhagen, who spent decades supporting homeless youth.

Seven neighborhood organizations - the Armatage Neighborhood Association, CARAG, the Cedar-Isles-Dean Neighborhood Association, the East Calhoun Community Organization, the East Isles Residents Association, the Hawthorne Neighborhood Council and the West Calhoun Neighborhood Council – contributed NRP funds totaling more than $100,000 to make this project a reality.

After Rita's House's opening, Mike Erlandson of the East Isles Residents Association NRP Committee commented, "their support for so many at-risk youth is critical...The neighborhood was honored to financially support the renovation."
