Lending Library

The Division of Race & Equity Needs YOUR Help!

The newly created Division of Race & Equity is creating a lending library for City of Minneapolis employees. The library includes past books that have been read for the citywide book club Reading for Equity And Diversity (READ). Those include:

Back to Our Roots: Exploring the History of Community Mental Health and Identifying Strategies to Advance Population Wide Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health is at the heart many of the challenges we face, including trauma and adverse childhood experiences, social isolation, institutionalize bias and discrimination, and "diseases of despair" that manifest in depression, suicide, and substance misuse. Addressing social determinants of health is key to helping communities navigate adversity, heal, and flourish.

Part one of the Web Forum series, Back to Our Roots: Exploring the History of Community Mental Health and Identifying Strategies to Advance Population Wide Mental Health and Wellbeing will provide an overview on how improving community conditions can reduce the incidence and intensity of mental health challenges, and help activate resilience.

The Web Forum is recommended for public health professionals, healthcare providers, behavioral health providers, community based organizations, faith-based organizations, and philanthropy/funders. Registration is free, thanks to the support from the Prevention Institute and Blue Shield of California Foundation. Close captioning will be available for all attendees.

Testify: American Slavery to Today - The Diane and Alan Page Collection

TESTIFY exhibit at Minneapolis Central Library, Jan. 8 - Feb. 6

Football Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page, along with Diane Sims Page, Executive Director of the Page Education Foundation, will publicly present TESTIDY, a preview of their collection of Americana. The wide-ranging exhibit will feature art and artifacts from pivotal eras in American history while also providing a platform for visitors to share their thoughts, feelings and personal experiences.

The free exhibit is open Jan. 8 - Feb. 6, in Cargill Hall at Minneapolis Central Library.

Inspired by the recent resurgence of racial tension in our country, TESTIFY gives context and definition to the conversation, serving as a reminder of the history that brings us to today.

Several events will be held during the course of the exhibit:

  • Jan. 31, 2-4 p.m. - Pohlad Hall, Minneapolis Central Library
Alan Page will present a talk titled "Testify: It's Not About the Flag or the Anthem, It's About Justice." The address will respond to the controversy surrounding NFL protests and will attempt to shift the focus from whether player protests are appropriate back onto the underlying issue of racial justice.

  • Feb. 1-3, 3-5 p.m. - Pohlad Hall, Minneapolis Central Library
NFL Films chronicles Alan Page's life in "Black Star Risen," a film produced by David Plaut. As a player, Page redefined the defensive tackle position in pro football and made the Hall of Fame - only to leave the game behind for a new career in law and education. Another film, "A Football Life: Alan Page" is a documentary about Page's journey in sports and beyond.

About ReCAST Minneapolis

The Resilience in Communities After Stress & Trauma (ReCAST) Minneapolis Program is funded through a multi-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). ReCAST Minneapolis is intended to assist high-risk youth and families, and promote resilience and equity in communities that have recently faced civil unrest through the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention and community youth engagement programs, as well as linkages to trauma-informed behavioral health services. SAMHSA created the ReCAST Program to support communities that have lived through demonstrations of mass protest in response to police-involved shootings of unarmed African-American males.
