City of Lakes

I am reaching out to inform residents that there was an officer involved shooting in our community last night on W 51st Street between Xerxes and Washburn Ave S. I have been in communication with our 5th Precinct Inspector Kathy Waite throughout the morning regarding this serious incident. As we await more details, I wanted to share what information is known at this time.

Last night, police responded to a call of unknown trouble to the area. There was an officer involved shooting and an adult female is deceased. Two police officers were placed on administrative leave.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has been and will continue to be the investigating authority for this incident. The Minneapolis Police Department did an initial canvas of the area to speak with residents last night and this effort is ongoing today. They continue to remain in communication with neighbors to the extent that they have information. Xerxes and Washburn are both reopened and the BCA is still processing the scene.  The fire department will clean the area once the BCA is finished with their work at that location.

I have been assured that the BCA will be releasing information as it is ready. We are told that we can expect a statement from the BCA today. I know we are all anxious for more information and I will share more details once I receive them. I am in constant communication with our Inspector Kathy Waite to understand as soon as possible what happened and why.

My heart goes out to everyone in our community and especially to those affected by this incident. Thank you for your patience as we work to understand more.

Yours in Service,
