Minneapolis Updates Zoning Code to Improve Food Shelf Accessibility

On May 13th, the Minneapolis City Council approved zoning code changes to increase food shelf location options and accessibility. Now food shelves can operate in more zoning districts across the city, providing more accessible food to people in need. Learn background and context on the changes here. Farmers Market Opportunities 

West Broadway Farmers Market Opens in New Location

After five seasons in its previous location the West Broadway Farmers Market is moving two blocks east on West Broadway Ave to the corner of Aldrich Ave N and West Broadway Ave (718 W. Broadway Avenue). The market opens June 17th. Learn more on their website here.

Market Vendor Permits Simplified

The City of Minneapolis is simplifying business requirements for farmers market vendors and has converted several vendor permit types to the Seasonal Food Permit. The permit can be used by eligible vendors to sell at farmers markets, civic events, and community celebrations.

Many Markets Open in June: Schedules Available on Homegrown Minneapolis Website

SNAP-EBT Customers Save Up to $10 at Farmers Markets with Market Bucks

Market Bucks is a state-funded program administered by Hunger Solutions that matches SNAP-EBT customers' spending at participating farmers markets, up to $10 in 2016.  Learn more about Market Bucks here. Minnesota Food Code requires a HACCP plan on some food processes and the Health Department wants to help you write one. Nurture Cooking Classes

 

When: Each Monday in June beginning Monday, June 6th 6:00-7:00

Where: Grandma's House Children Center at the corner of 31st and Lyndale (625 W 31st St, Minneapolis).

Cost: Classes are free but participants must meet income criteria. Childcare is provided.

If you’re interested in the June class, hearing about upcoming classes, or if you’d like to volunteer please reach out to Dina Hemminger, dinamarie.dm@gmail.com.

Each family participating in the class will receive free of charge: a slow cooker, a workbook packed with healthy recipes, and a small bag of groceries with nutrient dense ingredients so they can try out one of the new recipes at home. Backyard Chicken Basics Class

Do you have backyard chickens or are you considering getting some? All Minneapolis permit holders for backyard chickens or other allowable fowl are required to complete an eligible training within a year of submitting their permit application. These classes provide required and useful training for successfully keeping backyard chickens. Wayne Martin, University of Minnesota Extension Educator, will discuss chicken breeds, purchasing birds, and important regulations at this class. He will also talk about the daily care of chickens concerning their diet, housing, bird health, sanitation, manure management, and egg production.

Class is free but registration is required. To register or for more information, contact Wayne Martin, Extension Educator, by phone 612-625-6224 or e-mail marti067@umn.edu and indicate the training date/location you plan to participate in. (The same class will be presented at each location.) Interpretration will be provided upon request- please indicate if needed.

Hennepin County Grants for business recycling and organics 

Hennepin County Grants of up to $50,000 are available to businesses and organizations to start or improve recycling and organics recycling programs. The county also provide professional staff assistance, educational materials and guidance on best practices.
