Homegrown Minneapolis Annual Report Presented to Minneapolis City Council's Health, Environment & Community Engagement (HECE) Committee

Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council Co-chairs Russ Henry and DeVon Nolen along with Homegrown Minneapolis/Local Food Policy Coordinator Tamara Downs Schwei presented the Food Council's Annual Report to the City Council's HECE Committee Monday, April 4th. Report included local food system highlights and accomplishments in 2015, plans for 2016 and policy recommendations. Presentation materials. The report will be adopted and the recommendation regarding garden lease policy will be considered at the City Council meeting on Friday, April 15.

Minneapolis Approves Plastic Bag Ordinance

To reduce the litter, waste, environmental impacts and expense of managing carryout bags, the City Council approved an ordinance on Friday, April 1 to regulate the use of plastic carryout bags in retail establishments. The new ordinance takes effect on June 1, 2017.

The City is offering two organics recycling training sessions April 9. Get your questions answered with hands-on learning, demonstrations and tips that make recycling organics easy. Learn about the City’s new Recycling Block Leader program and how you can sign up to be the leader on your block.

  • Get a free kitchen organics collection container.
  • Pick up a free yard sign promoting organics recycling.
  • Enjoy refreshments with your neighbors.

You can also find the list of farmers markets on the back cover of a special edition of the 2016 Minnesota Grown Directory, through partnership between Homegrown Minneapolis and Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Minnesota Grown program. Look for the free directories around town or get a copy at an upcoming Food Council meeting.
