Missouri Department of Social Services Announces Updates to SNAP Verification Requirements Starting October 1
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Social Services-Family Support Division (DSS-FSD) today announced updates to the verification requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), effective October 1, 2026. No immediate action is required for individuals currently receiving SNAP.
To strengthen program integrity and ensure accurate eligibility decisions, applicants will now be required to provide documented proof for specific expenses and resources, rather than relying solely on an individual's statement self-attesting to this information.
Starting October 1, documented proof will be required for:
- Shelter costs, such as rent, mortgage, and utilities
- Dependent care or childcare expenses
- Countable resources, such as money in a bank account
Adjusting these guidelines reinforces the department’s responsibility as a steward of tax dollars maintaining an accountable SNAP program. Ensuring eligibility decisions are supported by documentation strengthens program oversight and public trust.
“Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the SNAP program is essential to supporting Missouri families who rely on these benefits,” said FSD Director Mandi Adams. “These updated verification guidelines help us make consistent, well‑documented eligibility decisions while safeguarding resources for households who truly need them. The goal of the Family Support Division is to strengthen the program in a way that is fair, clear, and supportive for participants across the state.”
Who is impacted and when?
These updates apply to initial SNAP applications, recertifications, and add‑a‑person requests submitted on or after October 1, 2026. Applications filed before October 1 will continue to follow the current policy. A one-time notice is currently being mailed to all SNAP participants to ensure they are aware of these upcoming changes.
No immediate actions are required for current households
Current SNAP households do not need to submit new documents simply because of the October 1 change. Furthermore, a participant’s statement will remain acceptable for certain interim changes until their next recertification, as well as for Direct Express Accounts and mobile applications, unless the information appears questionable or the household is close to the resource limit.
Acceptable forms of proof
Acceptable forms of verification include bills, receipts, lease agreements, bank statements, or written proof from the person or business being paid. Submitting complete documents promptly when requested can help prevent processing delays.
The Family Support Division remains committed to helping Missouri households access SNAP benefits accurately and efficiently. Additional updates, resources, and documentation examples will be posted on dss.mo.gov/food-assistance as they become available.
