Missouri Extends Healthy SNAP Timeline to February 2027 to Ensure Smooth Launch and Access

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.Today, The Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) announced an updated implementation timeline for the Healthy SNAP initiative, establishing a new official launch date of February 15, 2027. This intentional extension ensures that DSS can continue to collaborate with stakeholders and retail partners to deliver an effective and sustainable program from day one.

The Healthy SNAP initiative stems from Executive Order 25-30, which Governor Kehoe signed on September 29, 2025. The executive order directed DSS to prepare and submit a waiver to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to refocus Missouri's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The waiver aims to prioritize healthy foods and nutritional value, discourage foods that are high in added sugar and ultra processed ingredients, and support Missouri agriculture.

Originally slated for an October 2026 rollout, shifting the launch to early 2027 allows the state to thoroughly incorporate feedback from local grocers, agricultural partners, and community stakeholders. DSS submitted updated waiver materials to FNS on June 3, 2026, including revisions to definitions and the Healthy SNAP extension request, and the Department is currently awaiting further guidance. The extended window will be used by DSS to finalize program infrastructure, including clear regulatory guidance and comprehensive educational materials for Missourians.

To ensure a smooth transition, DSS will be providing retail partners with a comprehensive product identification list. This resource enables merchants to update their inventory databases and point-of-sale (POS) systems well ahead of the implementation deadline.

“Healthy SNAP is a critical investment in the future of Missouri families, and our administration is committed to a smooth rollout that ensures SNAP benefits are being used to purchase healthy, nutritious foods,” said Governor Mike Kehoe. “Extending this timeline to February 2027 ensures that when the program refocus launches, it will have a well-supported network of local retailers fully prepared to deliver widespread support to our communities.”

The DSS Family Support Division (FSD) is responsible for administering public assistance programs including SNAP, Temporary Assistance, Medicaid, child support, blind services, and other basic needs. Missourians in need of assistance can learn more or apply by visiting mydss.mo.gov.

DSS Highlights Open Applications for Missouri SuN Bucks

In alignment with the administration's ongoing commitment to nutrition, DSS is also reminding Missouri families that applications are currently being accepted for the Missouri SuN Bucks (Summer EBT) program to support families through the upcoming summer months.

“Our goal at DSS is to ensure that no child goes hungry, whether school is in session or not,” said Jess Bax, DSS Director. “The SuN Bucks program provides critical, immediate relief to families, and we encourage all eligible Missourians to visit our website and apply today so we can get these vital resources directly into the hands of the families who need them most.”

SuN Bucks is a seasonal program designed to help families buy food for their school-aged children during the summer months of June, July, and August. Qualifying families will receive a one-time $120 benefit per eligible child loaded onto an EBT card, which can be used to purchase nutritious foods at authorized locations. Families can check eligibility and apply at mydss.mo.gov/SUNBucks.
