Celebrating 50 Years of the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline marks its 50th anniversary, commemorating five decades of dedicated service in responding to calls, connecting families with resources, and ensuring the safety and well-being of children throughout the state.
Established on August 15, 1975, this hotline was designed to provide Missourians with a direct channel to report suspected child abuse or neglect. Over the years, it has evolved into a vital component of the state's efforts to protect children and strengthen family units.
“The Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline isn’t just a phone number—it’s a call to action,” emphasized Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe. “It serves as a reminder that protecting children is everyone’s duty. If you see something, say something.”
Since its inception, the hotline has been integral to the child welfare system, offering support to concerned neighbors and empowering mandated reporters. It ensures every child's safety is prioritized and that every report receives the necessary attention.
Key Milestones:
- Over 4.5 million calls received since 1975
- Expanded in 2016 to include online reporting for mandated reporters
- Received the 2023 Governor’s Award for Quality and Productivity for the Call Center Transformation with Genesys Cloud Platform
- Approval of 10 additional team members in the FY26 state budget
In 2024 alone, the hotline managed 154,967 reports.
“For 50 years, the Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline has acted as a lifeline for vulnerable children,” stated Sara Smith, DSS Children’s Division Director. “Each call represents a child who deserves a safe and healthy life, along with a caring adult who took action. This commitment continues to define us today.”
As DSS reflects on this significant milestone, Missouri reaffirms its dedication to keeping children safe and supporting families. This 50th anniversary stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of reporting and our collective responsibility. The work continues, as does the call to action.
