Jefferson City’s historic Union Hotel temporarily closed as a precaution for structural assessment

 Amtrak service and customer parking will not be disrupted

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 4, 2019 - The Missouri Office of Administration, Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the City of Jefferson have temporarily closed the historic Union Hotel building, located in downtown Jefferson City, for a thorough structural assessment. The decision to close the building was a precautionary measure to assure the safety of volunteers and visitors until the assessment can be conducted.

Part of the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, the building houses the Elizabeth Rozier Gallery and the Amtrak station waiting room. Amtrak service and customer parking will not be disrupted. Amtrak customers will have access to an outdoor tent and portable toilets for use while waiting to depart.

 

Built in 1855, the building’s exterior masonry is in need of evaluation by a structural engineer to confirm the building can be safely used. The assessment is expected to be conducted as soon as next week. The results will determine when the Amtrak station waiting room and the gallery can resume normal operations. The building is owned by the Missouri Office of Administration and managed in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources and the City of Jefferson. 

State and local officials are working with Amtrak to plan ahead and identify a potential alternate location for the customer waiting room if a long-term move is deemed necessary. Updated information will be provided as soon as it is available.
