***Missouri health care facilities and healthcare providers***
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) recommends healthcare facilities and providers read through this CDC Health Advisory regarding current outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo type of Ebola viruses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. There are no Ebola cases reported in the United States and the risk of spread to the Unites States is considered low at this time. However, the CDC reports it is possible for travelers from affected areas in DRC or Uganda to seek healthcare in the United States. DHSS encourages all Missouri healthcare facilities and providers to follow the guidance as outlined in this CDC Health Advisory and recommends following:
-
Promptly assess patients for travel history; consider using the following triage questions:
- Have you been in contact with a person with suspect or confirmed Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) in the past 21 days (for example touching, caring for, etc.)?
-
Have you been to an area with an active VHF outbreak (currently DRC and Uganda) or where VHF is endemic in the past 21 days? Stay up to date on active travel notifications.
-
Promptly assess patients for compatible symptoms and the other epidemiological risk factors within the 21 days before onset of symptoms, as outlined in the Health Advisory.
-
Immediately isolate and hospitalize patients who have both an exposure risk AND any symptoms compatible with BVD in a healthcare facility using recommended infection control precautions. Personnel caring for the patient should be trained on and wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
-
Immediately contact your local public health agency or the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ (DHSS’) Bureau of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention at 573-751-6113 or 800-392-0272 (24/7) to immediately report a patient suspected of having Ebola disease and for consultation regarding testing of the patient.
This outbreak and the subsequent information available are rapidly evolving. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services remains in close communication with CDC and will continue to monitor the current outbreak and provide updated guidance as available. For questions regarding this CDC Health Advisory please contact your local public health agency or the DHSS’ Bureau of Communicable Disease Control and Prevention at 573-751-6113 or 800-392-0272 (24/7).
