Bills Heard This Week
On Monday, April 20:
- The House Fiscal Review committee held an executive session on HB 2151. Sponsored by Rep. Travis Wilson (R-106), HB 2151 modifies provisions governing the Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant. It was voted do pass by a vote of 4 – 2, with one member voting present.
- Later that afternoon, the House 3rd read and passed HB 2151 by a vote of 116 – 32. It crossed chambers to the Senate, where it was 2nd read and referred to the Senate Economic and Workforce Development committee on April 21, and has a public hearing scheduled for next week.
- The House Rules – Legislative committee held executive session on HB 2585. Sponsored by Rep. David Casteel (R-97), HB 2585 modifies provisions relating to grants for certain workforce training programs. It was voted do pass by a vote of 11 – 0.
On Tuesday, April 21:
- The House Rules – Administrative committee held an executive session on HB 2722. Sponsored by Rep. Melissa Douglas (D-27), HB 2722 establishes the “Success for Homeless and Foster Youth in Higher Education Act”. It was voted do pass by a vote of 11 – 0.
- The House Crime and Public Safety Committee held a public hearing on HB 3439 and HB 3480. Sponsored by Rep. Peggy McGaugh (R-7) and Rep. Mitch Boggs (R-157), HBs 3439 & 3480 modify provisions relating to the eligibility of firefighters for a program that provides free college tuition for public safety personnel. Representatives from the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, the Fire Service Alliance, and Boone County Fire Protection District spoke in support. There was no opposition.
On Wednesday, April 22, budget bills (including HB 2003, MDHEWD’s budget bill) were debated on the Senate floor. The Senate substitute offered by Sen. Rusty Black (R-12) was 3rd read and passed by a vote of 22 – 9. The Senate version of the budget restores funding to institutions of higher education to the Governor’s original recommendation, and there was bipartisan support on the floor for remaining at that level once the budget goes to conference with the House.
On Thursday, April 23, the Senate 3rd read and passed HB 3279 by a vote of 29 – 0. Sponsored by Rep. Brenda Shields (R-11), HB 3279 modifies provisions relating to the Missouri Community Service Commission.
