P20W and Apprenticeships

A joint meeting of the Coordinating Board for Higher Education and the State Workforce Development Board in September included new P20W data on employment and wages for registered apprentices. Below are examples of median inflation-adjusted annual wages for apprentices after completion from 2010-2019.

Registered apprenticeships are another great pathway for education-to-workforce success in Missouri, and P20W is working to help better understand outcomes. Learn more about registered apprenticeships on the MDHEWD website.

Success Ready Students

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) was awarded a three-year grant to consider potential new measures of college and career readiness for school improvement and accountability.

Those new potential measures will include graduates’ employment and wage outcomes, which were not previously directly measurable and would involve P20W.

A kick-off meeting was held in August with a follow-up technical discussion in September. DESE is working on data sharing agreements with the researchers that will likely later be expanded to include P20W and the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DOLIR) for wage matching.

More P20W Progress

  • Recent connections with national and regional convenings to learn about progress and successes in other states and organizations included the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) Annual Summit, the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) Policy Conference, and the Kauffman Foundation’s Economic Mobility Research and Data Forum.
  • Assisted DHEWD’s Postsecondary Research team with updates to Student Right to Know, where students and families can see information on graduate outcomes, earnings, and program costs to help make the best decision for their futures.
  • Continued to review an updated data sharing agreement with our partner agencies that will help ensure P20W sustainability; also working to identify Data Stewards who will formally represent our partner agencies as new projects and policy development move forward.
  • Met with many new potential partners and stakeholders. Do you know anyone we should meet with? Reach out at P20Wresearch@dhewd.mo.gov.

What is P20W?

Missouri is linking data from preschool / early childhood through K-12 education and all avenues of postsecondary education and training (“Grade 20”) into the workforce.

Similar to efforts in many other states, we use de-identified data in ways that center privacy and confidentiality to better understand how people succeed in their education-to-workforce journey and what programs and policies helped them along the way.

Social and human services data can also be linked to help understand what programs helped residents succeed. The public will also have new tools to make informed decisions about education and training pathways and career choices.
