Bills Heard This Week
On April 22, HB 606, sponsored by Rep. Willard Haley (R-58), was perfected with four amendments this week:

Language establishing an MU seminary fund, and compromise language allowing MSU to offer doctor of philosophy degrees in disciplines other than engineers and to grant bachelor of science degrees in veterinary technology (amendment offered by Rep. Willard Haley, R-58)

Language allowing people to subtract contributions to MOST 529 savings accounts, but not other 529 accounts, from their state taxes (amendment offered by Rep. Bill Owen, R-131)
- Ann Kelley’s (R-127) Career-Tech Certificate Program bill; and
-
Language granting undergraduate course credit to students earning a score of 4 or higher on an international baccalaureate examinations (amendment offered by Rep. Kemp Strickler, D-34).
The perfected version unanimously passed out of the House Fiscal Review Committee on April 24, and was Third Read and Passed on the House Floor that afternoon. Next, it will move to the Senate.
On April 23, the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, chaired by Rep. Ed. Lewis (R-6), held a public hearing on HB 1269. Sponsored by Sen. Barry Hovis (R-146), HB 1269 modifies provisions governing proprietary schools. A representative from MDHEWD spoke in favor of the bill and answered questions from the committee. There was no opposition.
